Need Help to ID a 901 Transmission
I have a 901 trans that I purchased a while back. Was said to be a 5spd from a 68. My spec book ony goes back to 69. Can anybody confirm what I have. Serial # is 5091785, Case # is 901-301 2R.
Thanks

901/911 Transaxle serial numbers are 7 digits start with 7. On the bottom of the transaxle case should be a pad with a number on it, something like 901/XX where XX will be a number. That's what we need to ID the transaxle. BTW, it may also be 902 (a 912 gear box) or it may be a 914 case rebuilt in a 911 configuration.

All serial numbers beginning in '7' are intended for 6-cylinder applications, '5' indicates a 4-cylinder application in a 912.

Looks like you have a '69 912 transaxle ... you still need to clean up the underside and find the transaxle 'Type Number' ... it will be close to the serial number. It is stamped into the case. Those raw casting numbers you posted are not useful for identifying the type number and version of the transaxle!!!

stamped into - it will be lower than the surrounding metal
the casting no.s are 'embossed' higher than metal around them ... assuming it has never been scraped real bad along a road to something to remove the number.

I found the #'s. I guess I should have put on my reading glasses. Anyway it says 902/14. According to the chart that is a 4 spd 68. This brings about two questions.
1) Could this be a five speed and if it is how can I tell out of the car? 2) This shows as 68. Could this be a 69 trans? Thanks for the help!

Nov. '68 was well into 1969 production cars ... so, just as the serial number [third digit] indicated, it is a '69 model.
Mount a 'Tee' handle on the shift rod sticking out of the nose cone ... and see if you can get to all six gears in a 5-speed pattern. A 4-speed can be converted to five speeds, so it is worth checking ...
