widest rear tire for flare

I am currently running 245/45/16 avs es 100s mounted to 16x8 phone dials on the rear of my 1973 914 6 gt conversion and 225/50/16s on the front. I have 944 turbo brakes on all fours. I wish to pick up a set of Fuchs and would like to fill up those flared wheelwells in the rear. What is the best fitment tire wheel combo for front and rear of my car that will provide clearance for the calipers.

David

Hi David:

Tough one for anyone to answer. I have SC A calipers up front and stockers in the rear and 245/50-15 X 8" all round and I couldn't fit anything bigger if I wanted to. I think the flares must be a bit different.

Good luck, Dave

I have about an inch and a half to play with over my 245's, I am hoping that some of the other gt flared body owners will chime in.

David Hello I am running extra wide steel flares front and rear. The wheels are a Borbet 9x17 front and 11x17 rear. The wheels are an extremely well made billet type wheel and came off of a Porsche Carrera flared targa. The tires are Dunlop 225x45x17 front and 265x45x17 rear. They are held on by a complete Porsche 911 suspension front and rear. Koni shox, front and rear, and turbo tie rods, and a four wheel alignment have made a huge difference.
The Borbet wheels will give way to set of 9x16 and 11x16 Fuchs alloy wheels.
This car is a 1975 with a 2270, Dell carbed motor. This will make way for a 3.2 DME injected motor.
One thing you may want to consider is using longer wheel studs and running spacers in the rear.

V*** NICE, Craig
I am already equipped with the long wheel studs, when I purchased my car it was a track car which I converted back to street, It has all the trimings, and am running a
79 sc 3.0 for an engine. All I have left to do is the cosmetic stuff on the exterior, The HRE 311 fuchs 3 piece are the ones I have been interested in. How much wider did you set out your flares.

Hey that looks great, I like the gas flap. Always thought about trying that.
I would go with the Huntley 17s, I like there one piece wheels, but they are the ones to go with.
I think with the stock GT flares you will be able to easily get a 8 or 9 under the rears. Are you going to a 16 or 17 inch wheel.
My flares are out to about 9 inches.

Mine look to be about 7.5 inchs.
I think I would like to go with 17" wheels 9.5 or what will fit a 265 or 275 tire.
Thats why I am researching this forum so I know what my options are.
as you can see, I still have some room to go wider and bigger flares are an option also. Heres more pics of the project.

Toman It doe's zip arong here, I have a few other P cars to drive so it has to wait it's turn.
I plan to drive to Rainbonnet this weekend, are you going?

The car came out of Calif. to Eugene Oregon, and I saw it get 0 bids on ebay. It had the big black bumpers then.
I drove down and looked at it, and pondered over wheter to buy it for about 6 months. Finally I said yes and bought, changed to early chrome bumpers and bought a 3.2 six to go ini the engine hole, a very healthy 4 cyl is living there now.

David - looks good!
I am running about 8.5 inches flare at center ( OK boxstr, no mine-is-bigger-than-yours jokes ), with 275/40 ZR17's at rear. Plenty of rubber hitting the pavement.
I really like the looks of the phone-dials but you're right, they leave a lot lacking on your setup. Wish I could help you with the Fuchs - but (OK, crucify me) I don't like the looks of them that much.

P.S. - Are you the artist? Have you done any 914 drawings ?

Hey, David--I think I like the red hood on your car! I think a red rear deck lid and red headlight covers would help that look.

Hmm, and here I thought I didn't like multi-color paint jobs!!

Dave

The hood was from my donor car, the original was damaged during shipping, the hood sprung and bent forwards and backwards all the way from s.cal to mpls.
The car will be getting a fresh coat of Dupont Premier single stage Black this winter.
and I have all new trim right down to the grill letters.
I sort of like it orange also, but my daughter is embarrassed to be seen in it that way. I came across a 914 6 gt photo of a car that had the same thing going on with the hood. I will dig it up and post a pic.
I might pull off the existing fiberglass flares and reinstall steel. Did you guys widen the stock flares or did they come that way.
Lee, yes I am the artist and have painted a few 914s and 911s on commission.
I will post a sample.
Check out my web of our Golf holes you may be familiar with them.

Sean I have about 1 1/4 " from the widest part of the tire to the trailing arm, and about 3/4" to the inside wheelwell. Dont know the offset but will pull a wheel off and check it, I beleive they are 86 944 turbo wheels.
