boge self leveing shock swap?

Hey Guys, Im in the process of restoring a 1970 911E currently im sorting out the front suspension. My car has the boge self leveling struts. i have been told that they stoped making the replacement strut inserts and that i need to change out the whole front suspension. Any sugestions? Does anyone know of a company that will custom rebuild the inserts i already have on the car? If i have to change suspensions what years will fit and will they take the S alloy calipers i already have?
Thanks,
Geoff

Geoff,

Fairly simple conversion ... just unbolt old, install replacements, and get alignment afterwards.

Here are a couple of scans that may make it more clear. First is the hydropneumatic setup, second is a coonversion kit that was available in years past. Any '78 or later struts would take the 90 mm ear spacing of your 'S' calipers, or later 'A' calipers.

All of the parts in the pic besides the struts are needed to restore/provide adjustability for the torsion bars ...

Cool

I have done this to my '70 911E. I used the front suspension lower A-arms from a 911T. The stock lower A-arms had no provision for torsion bars. You will also need a cross member. Make sure you have provisions for mounting this cross member. I understand that some early hydropneumatic front ends didn't.

Good luck,
David Duffield

will the suspension out of a 79sc cut the mustard?

Red face

The hydro-pneumatic/self leveling suspension were only on the 'E' models correct? The setup on my 1970 911T looks awfully similar to the illustration. Assuming I have this dreaded setup, will the front suspension from a 78-83 SC be direct bolt-in replacement or will there be some custom fabrication needed? For that matter, how bout the rear suspension?

When installing later aluminum arms on the rear of early 911s (69-71) you need to do the following: Replace the rear shocks with the later model type. Since some of the earlier chassis had smaller shock housings (where the shock slips through and mounts in the engine compartment), you may have to cut down the dust cover to just barely cover the bump rubber on the shock. The mounting pads on the aluminum arms will have to be cut down and filed smooth. Approx 1/2" will do. What you are trying to accomplish is to approximate the shock angle of the early rear suspension. Without doing this you will have the dust cover rub against the shock body, the shock mounting tubes rub against the shock body, and finally the shock may rub against the heat exchangers. You can bend over the vertical seam of each heat exchanger and tap it flat for additional clearance. NOW, those rear arms will work just fine. On 72-73, they come with the larger shock tubes , so won't need the dust cover modification, but will still need the cut down on the lower shock mount on each arm to get the angle right.

Actually more concerned about the front suspension. Should I happen to have the dreaded self leveling setup, I was thinking of using an SC front suspension that way I'd have upgraded rotors as well. The post I ran across included the rear suspension as well.
