I think Ruf put an intercooler behind each back tire.

You might be able to adapt an aftermarket intercooler in there if you removed the AC... Peugot made some deep but narrow intercoolers for early turbo cars...

I am ducking and running as I say this, but is there some way you can put on the bigger RUF front valence (with the opening for the oil cooler) and do a front mount intercooler, like some aftermarket companies make for supras, etc.?

That's an awfully long way for the air to travel.

there has to be airflow thru it, so it won't do any good set off to the side. that's why it's above the fan and sealed to the louvres on the wing.

The front mount exchanger would have to be a water system, could result in a chunk of extra weight to do that.

Hiding a pair diagonally in the rear body has always seemed feasible if you could work out some venting to produce enough air flow. That's still lots of plumbing volume to reach that far from the intake unless you again use air/water.

You might also consider a water/air intercooler with a front mounted radiator...

Eric, It's been a while since I've seen them but from what I recall they were like 6x12 and about 2.5" deep...

What are those intercoolers off of? Are they from someones kit or are they a custom job? Looks slick. I'm wondering about how to get enough air to them.

The tail does more than provide air to the intercooler. If he plans on running the car to its potential, I would be thinking about how to keep the rear planted. I am not sure about the tailess look on a widebody...although I can understand.
I think it's going to be tough to get the appropriate sized intercooler tucked down close in the engine bay, and expect it to perform . That's why they didn't do it in '77. A far as sleepers go...there are a bunch of 3.6's in early models that would easily outperform an '78 minus it's intercooler.
