944 Turbo With Msd??ballast Resitr?
Hi
I planning to install a msd ignition system in my 951 1986 , after review some topics here people experience gain in low end and better smooth allover ride! My car already has 8.5 magnecores wires --So I chose 6200 6a msd box just because is the simplest system then I got msd blaster 2 coil I got 8202 ,and 4 platinum plugs !!I bought all that in pelican parts nice service and fast delivery but my main question is my coil dosen't have something call 0.8 ohm Ballast Resistor, I just wondering if is really necessary When I placed the order in pelican I asked them but after talk to 2 different guys they said is not necessary for 944 but I still have my doubts!!!before I install the system , Can you guys give me green light , Or should I get the ballast resistor !!what is the function of that!!!!thanks

you dont need it, its basically for a points type ignition.
My friends old 442 would burn out the points because he didnt have the resistor.... You can confirm this here: http://www.msdignition.com/coil_blaster_1_8200_8202_8223.htm

GREEN LIGHT !!
I've had my MSD 6200 6a for about 35 years now, so I know I can help. The function of the ballast resistor is to limit the charging current to the primary side of the coil. The Porsche factory coil has the ballast resistor built into it.
OK, on to MSD stuff. The MSD Blaster coil does NOT have a built in ballast resistor. If you are using the MSD 6a box, you do NOT need a ballast resistor with the MSD Blaster coil because the MSD 6a box has the ballast resistor built into it. IF YOU EVER BYPASS the MSD 6a back to factory ignition AND you still want to use the MSD Blaster coil with the factory setup, YOU MUST USE A 0.8 ohm BALLAST RESISTOR in-line with the coil (+) or you WILL burn out the coil, or worse, the coil driver circuitry in the Motronics DME. Tech stuff: Using just the Blaster coil with the factory setup, MSD wants you to limit the charging current to 15 Amps. How? With an external ballast resistor. So if I=E/R, where: I is current in amps E is voltage in volts R is resistance in ohms I=12 volts/0.8 ohms = 15 amps !! Now you can easily see that without a ballast resistor, as the resistance lowers toward zero ohms, the current rises toward infinite amps resulting in a failed $45 coil, or worse, a failed $$$ Motronics DME.

Which plugs did you get? I am quite happy with the NGK G-Power platinum plugs in my N/A. I have read other posts (search spark, plugs) that caution against platinum plugs with a turbocharged motor. In any event, MSD and NGK both say that if you are using the MSD ignition box, you can widen the spark plug gap to take advantage of the higher voltage it produces. In my experimentation with my seat-of-pants dyno, I ended up with a 0.036" plug gap (as opposed to 0.028" for a stock setup). That's for a N/A motor. You will have to experiment, as there are other varibles to consider with a turbo motor. Maybe you could find something on the 951 bulletin board.

You will proly notice a cleaner crisper throttle response and a little more pull, I know I did when I have a ignition on my 924S but it wont be a huge gain. You might want to try playing with your spark plug gaps now that you have a better ignition, it will help

Yes, more low end grunt and smoother overall. But, again, I have a N/A motor. If I had a turbo, I would probably use NGK V-Power, Bosch Super or even NGK irridium plugs, but the irridium are expensive. Check out the 951 forum. There are some opinions against using the Bosch + anything plugs I'm sure this topic is covered more than once.

Big difference on the low end with my 69 firebird, it REALLY woke up the car!
