Errr - small pool of oil in my ... airbox?

I was having a bit of quiet enjoyment tinkering with my 84 944 this afternoon. On my way to doing something else, I removed my air filter cover and filter (first time since recently purchasing the car) and looked over the inside of the airbox, looking for dirt, etc.

What I found was a small (approx 3-4 cc) of dirty oil pooled in the rear driver's side corner. The rest of the air box was clean - no oil trails from anywhere.

The car seems to run just fine.

Has anyone ever seen/heard of this before? Should I just forget about it?

Is it, perchance, a K&N filter?

crankcase is vented to box, might have worn rings & getting some blowby. I wouldn't worry too much unless it gets to be a whole lot.

Well, I've never purchased a K&N filter so I'm not sure what they look like. I've heard one must oil them which leads me to suspect they use foam of some sort as the primary filtering element ... My current air filter looks like it uses paper as the primary filtering element. It doesn't have any manufacturer's logo on it ...

As far as crankcase blow-by is concerned - I would think my air filter would be fouled with oil/crankcase dirt (which it doesn't seem to be).

Do 944s have PCVs or is the air box the defacto PCV?

The crankcase vents to the air box under the filter, so no oil on filter would be there present on. K&N Filter is just like the regular filter except instead of a paper medium it uses cotton cloth. The oil is like WD-40 except its red tinted. I don't think there's a pvc valve.

Oil in the airbox is not rare and the issue has been brought up here on Pelican from time to time. No one seems to know the answer as to why. I had a bunch in mine before I installed my K&N. If you don't already have one, I recommend purchasing a K&N air filter. Good luck!

Well, after searching old postings I found one that had the following comment:

"Had the oil in airbox syndrom as described when I first purchased my 84' 944. It turned out that I had a bad brake booster and various other vacuum leaks that was pulling the oil out of the intake. Fixed the vacuum leaks and no more problems."

What does he mean by "was pulling the oil out of the intake"? I didn't know oil EVER was part of the intake?

just guessing, but he prolly meant pullin the oil from the crankcase.

I just found oil in the intake hose from the air filter in my 96' Jetta. I'm glad to here you guys don't think it's a big deal. Anyone want to buy a Jetta?

I found how the oil was getting into the airbox when I took my oil filler tube off. On the side of the oil filler is a thingy that has a vacuum line on it. It goes to the breather eventually. It looks like a pcv valve but it's not, it's just a straight shot.
