Parking brake handle
It seems my parking brake handle is not working properly. It no longer ratchets/clicks when it is pulled up. It just returns to the down position.
The brake works, it stops the car from rolling when the car is in neutral. Any way to fix this? There was nothing in the Haynes manual about fixing this. Thanx

First you need a diagram of the toothed pawl that is inside the handle.
Next you will need a screwdriver. You have to pull the handle all the way up and as you slowly press the button in flip the pawl around to catch the bent hook on it's end. Use the screw driver to reach the pawl to flip it. Then you let the handle down all the way and release the button. Now you jack up the back of the car and take the wheels off because you have to adjust the parking brakes.

Take off the back wheels and spacer and look for a round hole about the diameter of a nickle. Use the screw driver to reach trough the hole and adjust the star nut for the shoe brakes. The star nut is at the top of the backing plate. Adjust the shoes tight turning the drum back and forth then back off till you just barely hear any scraping. Think there is a certain number of turns but I can't recall what they are.

Thanks again. I won't be able to adjust the brakes this weekend. I should have access to a garage next weekend though.

I think I am doing something wrong here. Which way am I supposed to flip the pawl? I tried today, and I can't get it to catch.

It's kind of a combination of two movements; flipping the pawl and pressing in the linkage to match. The handle has to be all the way up to do this as the pawl has to clear the top of the gear segment that it normally catches on.

Since this happenes all the time on older VW's I got real good at fixing it. Part of doing a brake job as worn rear brakes will let the pawl flip over.

Is it better to pull the pawl from the bottom, or push it from the top.

I use the screw driver to reach up between the under side of the handle and the gear segment -- from the front. You can flip the pawl around before you push the button in. This will give you a "feel" for it.
So as you hold the handle all the way up you push the button in and flip the pawl around so the bump matches the bend in the end. Kind of a pickle to do the first time but then after that it's a breeze. Note: The handle has to go all the way up for the pawl to flip over.

cool, I'll let you know how I make out. I think I was trying to move the pawl the wrong way.
Hopefully I won't have to do this again after I adjust the brake.

Send me air fare and meet me at the airport. I can fix it in about a minute. Adjusting the rear parking brakes will take 20 minutes longer.

my parking brake did that where you would pull it up, and it would just slip backdown. what i did was remove the whole parker brake assembly, and then take out the ratchet piece that grabs on the teeth to hold it up. mine was worn down and rounded. so i put a dremel to it too make a "new" sharp tooth. easy fix.

why not remove the parking brake handle, it's not hard at all to re-install... and a lot easier to work on.

The pawl can be flipped back round in less than a minute.
To remove the parking brake lever assembly you also have to remove the seat. But if the teeth on the pawl are rounded you have no choice.

I believe Bookbinders closed about a year ago. I know a lot of people here who were upset about that.
