ST Project update: It's Legal: first drives from the neighborhood

Yesterday I went to DMV and finalized the paperwork. The ST is now street legal. Of course as an antique there is no inspection so a few things are not working. Notably the speedo is not connected since I am converting to an electric from cable driven. I also still have no horn. I fixed the tach today. The stock tach reads the signal from my Crane Hi6 with no adaptor.

The first drive went down the street. I stopped to check a few things and had a tire rubbing the oil line. Back to the garage for a few adjustments and some extra clamps on the oil lines. Those 9.5s are tight under there. I think a small spacer would be nice.

Next time out I hit the local expressway. Oh my this car is fast. With so little weight on the front it lifts hard under acceleration. It feels so quick. I am still getting used to the 915. My worn 901 shifts so much better. I may have to go back to a 901.

I am having a problem with a disconnected feeling in the right steering. The only thing I can find is play in the rubber on the strut mount. Might be time for some monoballs. The front feels so bouncy. I think the 22s are too stiff still.

The car is loud and raw even with the sound damping I put under the carpet. It will be tough on those 4 hour drives to the track.

Here are a few extra pics.

What else needs to be done.

Install cage and harnesses
align and corner balance.
spacers up front to fill wheel wells and prevent rubbing on strut
install that 993TT brake setup thats on the shelf.

DRIVE THE SNOT OUT OF IT!!!!

That is an evil looking car! I'm considering doing an ST conversion on my '72 Tangerine coupe. What width wheels are you running front and rear?

Whoa~~ cool car...but tell me about the mirrors! Those look like original spec for both sides. Can you suggest a source? I am trying to match my '73 left side rectangualr style on the right.

Thanks for the comments.

Jake, The mirrors were bought used as a pair from a fellow Pelican. I beleive they orniginally came from a glossy PP catalog. Unfortunately not our host. They are actually quite nice and do not have the problems that newer supplies seem to have with edge crimps. I did have to run a tap through the threads though.

That car is looking really good! Are those 930 flares at the front?

Jamie,
The car looks great! I'm starting to like the early 911s better without a duck tail. If I hadnt done the RS look, I would have gone with an ST look. Have fun with the car!

I was along for the ride yesterday and can attest to this car's quickness. When Jamie was on the loud pedal, and I mean that literally, I was using muscles in my neck that I don't know if I've used before. The front, like Jamie said, is extremely stiff. He has not installed his sway bars yet, and this car has absolutely no body roll during hard cornering. Oh, and it looks awesome too. Great work Jamie.

Beautiful work, Jamie!

Wish you still lived up here so I'd have the chance to see it in person.

Enjoy.

Ubiquity, The fronts are complete RSR fenders from GT racing. Not a true ST flare, but then again... I have never seen two STs that look alike.

No changes to this appearance. I will just add some horn grills and wash it one of these days.

Lucky, You are welcome to come to Austin anytime.

Damn! Now that's what I'm talking about!

If the 4 hour drive to the track is too much just let someone else drive. I'm sure you would have a waiting list.

Tell me about the paint. In the photos it kind of looks like a matte or semi-gloss gray. Or is it just the lighting? Now that I'm thinking about it a matte gray seems pretty cool.

I have been wanting to build a long hood with a 993 engine/suspension in the rear and what you have there is exactly what the doctor ordered.
