				Engine Shroud Painting, Help!

Hello everyone, Question: My shroud for my 3.2 Carrera was painted and I was wondering what the best and safest way to remove the paint. Aircraft paint remover or what? I'm looking for methods other than sanding the paint off. 2nd Question: I'd like to pain it RED so what is durable and recommended and where can I buy some? Thanks, Alex

 It's acrylic urethane. It's expensive.

very nice Ronin. You have to sand some to rough up the surface for the new paint to stick. If yours is sound, there is no need to remove all the paint. Degrease the whole piece VERY well, then sand with 120. All paints will have different prep instructions, so make sure you get them. You can get pretty good auto paint premixed in a can from paintscratch.com or other places.

I stripped my Shroud and fixed all the broken bits: This: went to this: There was no stripping of paint that could be done. I had to sand it all down after I drilled out the rivets on the metal guide. I used West systems to patch all the holes and breaks. I'll re-drill the holes during reassembly of the motor. Looks very nice. I used recommended Krylon Fusion over primer: Painting Engine Shroud Best regards, Michael

I think it is near impossible to achieve the original look. The early shrouds had the color impregnated into the resins and the nice OEM FG texture cannot be duplicated with paint Also, at least with mine, the surface was incredibly porous with lots of little voids that the paint had gotten into so if someone painted it a different color then the OEM color it would be tough to extract all of the paint out of the voids leaving a less then acceptable result. Getting back to OEM IMHO is not possible after all this time unless you can do it with soap and water. That said, I love the results of my work and only a concours nut would complain and that, I am not... yet Best regards, Michael
