is there any road racing in Austin Tx area?

Might take a job offer in Austin, but believe it or not, the deciding factor may very well be whether I can run the car on a road course or not! Gotta be able to race and spend some of that money.

I don't run in a specific class, nor want to. I just run with "open" clubs that allow you to pay your money and run what you brung...

So, anything like this in the Austin area, or within a few hours of Austin?

They have karting! Some would say that's better than sports cars.

Texas World Speedway (College Station) has a really good road course. I usually abhor rovals, but the road course at TWS only uses the front stright of the oval and even has a well used configuration that goes outside the back of the oval and has elevation changes. It's quite a good course.

Austin is in the middle of some really great tracks !
Texas World Speedway in College Station, about 2 hours away,
Texas Motorsport Ranch in Ft. Worth, Texas Motor Speedway
in Ft. Worth about 3 1/2 hours. Houston Motorsport Ranch
about 3 1/2 hours. All the above have websites, you can link
to from www.hcrpca.org. Austin has a good group of track
junkies as does Houston and Dallas. There will be two PCA
Club races next year, The Houston Motorsport Ranch is brand
new and the Texas Motorsport Ranch in Ft. Worth, actually it is
in Cresson Tx. has just added and new section of track.
There is also Svar and Nasa if you are not PCA friendly.
Again the Austin PCA web site will help.
Good Luck !
Chuck

Chuck summarized it well.

Don't forget there is The Driver's Edge and the TWS "club" that both run DEs for theh non-PCA. There is also a track in OK (Hallet (sp?) that is about 5 hours. They usually run a club race there as well.

We have a great PCA group that travels to track events. Always someone to caravan with.

DE season starts Jan 14 and runs through about Dec. 20th of next year. Events just about every weekend year round. Lots of track time to burn rubber, brake pads and cash from your wallet.

As Roger Mentioned we have a good Kart track. It runs on an old parking lot at the airport. We have a weekly league on Thursday nights that usually runs from Nov. through March to keep the winter skills fresh. Iron Rock is a full F1 style kart facility. you can "arrive and drive" or join as a member with your own karts. Lots of fun.

Look us up when/if you get to town.

great... thanks for the replies guys. I figured there had to be some road course junkies out there as well. Probably wouldn't run with PCA just because I have a V8 914 and they tend to not give much time to those cars, but will definitely keep them in mind. At any rate, there would have to be "run what you brung" groups out there with that many tracks to choose from...

The Austin PCA really isn't that way... if you are a track person and
know your way around, that is all that matters. If you go to the links
on the hcrpca web site under photos, look for the pics at the track.
We have Vettes, Ferraris, BMWs, Mini's, Nissans ....ect. Take a look
Two years ago we had a guy with an old VW bus that happen to have
a Porsche 3.2 motor show up at an event, he drew a crowd and got
lots of complements !

Thanks again Chuck, you're right. Saw a mini, some Ferraris and some Lotuses, or Lotii or whatever the plural of Lotus is Looks like a good bunch of cars and TWS looks like a great track... huge if anything

We'll see how negotiations go over the next year and if all works out, I will be opening a small assembly plant for a startup company down there... just had to be sure there was going to be good road racing in the area There is always drag racing, but good RR is hard to find in some regions.

Austin is a great area for the track. TWS in College Station, MotorSport Ranch in Cresson (Ft. Worth), MotorSport Ranch in Houston, and TMS in Denton are all fairly easy drives. You also have very active PCA regions and clubs that hold lots of events on these tracks.

Better yet, become a member at MSR in Cresson and have the track almost any weekend you want it:

austin

Hi,

I have flown into austin a few times and the kart track is nice.. You could get a top end CRG 125 shifter for about 5K and have a BLAST... I raced one last year a few times. 3 g's cornering about 125 top end on a long track.. sprint track like in austin about 70 I would think.. a huge amount of fun.. good luck.

David, you would be surprised. There are flat out sweepers into the main straight at Iron Rock Raceway (kart track). The shifter karts are regularly clocked above 115-120 on the straight. The 9hp karts we run in our leagues are full speed well before the lead in corners. Lots of fun.

Hey, if you ever in Austin on a Thursday night, let me know. that is the night of our league. There is usually enough spaces to squeeze one more kart on the track.
