Thats cool! I used to have one years ago. I always had problems with gobs of understeer. Your setup looks like my old car, tire wise, I bet it pushes like a mutha.

Those Bajas are all over the place here in AZ. You only see them in the "winter" time though...

I had one of those years ago. taking a hard left, hit some tractor ruts in the dirt road and the next second... all four tires facing up. we roll it back over, knock out the windshield so we could see, and back to terrorizing the canefields. those things are tons of fun, but with a tubeframe, you can knock down trees. well... small trees, the big oak trees fight back. get it up to about 40+mph in a wet open field, hard turn left or right, hit the emergency brakes and hold on. it's a wild ride!

Emergency brake is long gone.
This thing amazes me. All this on street tires!
I have a set of Fuchs going on it later in the week. The tire shop is mounting some 31X10.5X15 all terrain tires on them!

I used to take 2 rims, cut the inside lip and center off one, the outside lip on the other and weld them together. with a liner, tube and large tires x 4, you could almost float across the water or mud. a couple words of advice... get a winch and don't take it out in the woods right before dark alone. it's a long way to walk home after you get stuck going somewhere you maybe should not have gone. done this too many times

Anyone of you have head stud problems?

My VW used to back them out every 100 miles or so. I used to carry a ratchet and socket in the car and tighten them up all the time. My friends used to laugh at me. You could hear when it was time to tighten them again. I am amazed that car even ran.

Thanks for the fun memories. I had a hoot in my Baha.

That head stud setup sounds like a bummer. I just had some oil filter problems -- full-flow oil filter setup, with oil lines running out into the fender where I had the filter mounted. My oil pump exceeded the pressure rating for the fittings I was using and dumped 3.5 quarts of hot oil onto my exhaust. It took me almost a second to figure out what the massive cloud of smoke was before I spotted the oil light. Fun times, lying in the remaining oil while jerry-rigging a "get me home" setup. Woohoo!

lol, I'm less concerned about exhaust emissions than I am about dribbling oil.

What's it take to make an off road setup work right? Did you keep the t-bars and just raise the car, or is it a completely new suspension?

Way too high tech.

I left the front alone and put some inflatable air shocks in the back.

I am sure there are more refined setups, but, I was 18 years old and just wanted to play as long as the truck tires did not rub in the rear I was happy.

The suspension on mine is all stock. The thing is unstoppable! I can't wait to get these mounted.....

I have dibs on a set of bus axles and gear reduction boxes which combined with the 31" tires will give me almost 15" of ground clearance!

I love it. You need so pics of you jumping it about 10 ft in the air. I would love to have one but no A/C down here is a death sentence.

I love it! Brings me waaaay back. I still have a couple of Bugs; not Baja'd or anything, just bone-stock streeters. One is my daily commuter battle wagon. I just love these things; they are what eventually led to my Porsche addiction...

The only "street legal" (somewhat loosely defined) car I ever did a wheelie in was a buddie's Baja. Everything outside the greenhouse was glass or gone; had a 2200-and-some-odd-cc big bore stroker motor, the bus transaxle you mention, and lots of other goodies. It would wheelie at will from a dead stop if you rev'ed the bejesus out of it and dumped the clutch. What fun!
