My blown motor!
Well 'it' finally happened.
Lost the motor going over T1 at Laguna on thursday. Very expensive sounds and I was like a low flying skywriter with the amount of smoke coming out. I couldn't even see out the rear window. "Letting the smoke out" is an understatement. ![]() First diagnostic says chain tensioner collapse. I was on the phone Friday afternoon and it looks like I have a 2.7 longblock lined up for immediate delivery. It hardly even phased me. I just quietly said to my passenger: 'I blew my enegine'. That was it. That was as exciting as it got. I kinda laughed it off in the paddock. ![]() So, let's talk about 2.7's, shall we? Power, the good and bad. I believe it's a '75 7R case. I also need jetting info for Weber triple 40's. Obviously the jets for a two liter will never fly. ![]() Thanks. KT

I just pulled the carbs off and found aluminum shavings down one hole...
Stay tuned. KT

No reason to swear too much about it. Won't change much so a little "Life is Short" philosophy is a good thing. Sorry to hear about it though.

I sucked an exhaust valve and punched the piston. #1.
I'd been showing smoke on decel for as long as I can remember. KT

That turned into an expensive track day! I suppose going to the 2.7 will eventually make this episode a little easier to swallow.

Yikes!
It hurts less if you view it as an "opportunity" rather than a "problem". From what I've been able to follow in the last couple years' worth of posts, you got a LOT of track days out of this engine with minimal troubles!

I just switched my track engine into my road car. Complete 2.7 for sale, CIS or Webers your choice...

I logged about 50 track days and 40 a/x's on this motor.
Some street driving too. It worked out to about $17 per event, as the motor was $1500 including Webers originally. I have WAY more money in fuel for the car and truck trailering to events!! My replacement 2.7 should be here within the week. Yay!! KT

Clean up all those parts and glue them to a board to hang on the wall to make a nice collage.

We met at lunch on Friday at the track. This is really interesting. Are you planning to tear into the engine a bit more to see what other wear/damage there was? Your story about the amount of use you got out of that engine was a bit like the stories you hear about centenarians and their formula for long life. Amazing testament to the engineering of Porsche. Would also be interested in hearing about your maintenance routine.
All ears here. Best Guy

Given the choice/opportunity, and since I've had both, I'd go with a 3 liter. They're more reliable and leak less. My last 2.7 iteration was nicknamed Valdeez.

Someday I'll have a high strung 3.6 with PMO's...Someday.
For now this is the best I can do. ![]() Guy, nice to have met you at Laguna. My routine for maintenance was pretty simple: annual oil change and valve adjust. That's about 40-50 hours of track use. Some guys have suggested oil changes after each event. I guess I could have tore it down and had it rebuilt after I noticed the smoke on decel two years ago. How much would it have cost me to do a valve job or top end refresh? Likely a lot more than the price I'm paying for the 2.7 I knew I would not rebuild this motor, so it is what it is. KT

Too bad / Great News; I like the way you are looking at it.
Question 1: What do you think caused the valve to drop into the cylinder? Question 2: Can I buy some of the old parts to make desk accessories with? (more lemonade making...) Cheers, DJP

When valve guides wear out they can no longer draw heat away from the valve & when wobbling in the guide, the valve no longer makes good contact with the seat to draw off heat. If you're "lucky" the valve burns & leaks like a
sumb!tch.....then there's Trekors result.... Smoke on the decell is your motors cry for help.

Right on, guys!
I'm up in the air with my decisions here. I'm not sure yet, but I suspect the valve stem broke. We'll see soon. The inside of the cylinder/head should be a sight to behold. Rebuilding the 2.0 to 'Le Mans' spec ( 220 hp ) is a dream as well. 8000rpms on Webers would be a smile generator ![]() There's an outside chance that I'll be driving again at Sears by 3/21...Outside. Believe me, I don't want to show up in an Escort GT ![]() KT

I think there's an expert at Motormeister who thinks that some J-B Weld and some time can get those "parts" within spec. I speak from experience.
![]() Sorry about your misfortune, Trek, but it does create new "opportunities". ![]() Best, Kurt |
