M758 Upgrade - Lots of pictures!!

Got some Turbo S brake stuff from Russell here on Pelican, and thought that I would document my conversion to M758.

A bunch of parts from a Turbo S parts car:

The magical, elusive Turbo S spindles and hubs with the radial caliper mounts, but there is a problem with one of them. The car was crashed on passenger side and the tie rod arm bent in slightly:

Let's fix the hubs first, by replacing the inner and outer races:

Now heat the snot out of the bent arm, magnaflux it and we are back in business....

Out with the old (R), in with the new (L):

Aren't they purty! Nice 928 S4 calipers, freshly painted. You can see the additional hard lines needed for these in the upper right of the picture:

Here are the anti-squeal pads used on these calipers:

Put things back together, and:

Now let's put them on the car:

Here's a view of the hydraulic hookup - the hardline hooks into a shorter flex line and mounts onto the strut. I don't show the additional metal clip used to hold it in place in this picture:

And here are the obligatory "Before" and "After" pics:

Parts needed for the conversion:
Caliper mounting washers (4) P/N: N 011 564 2
Front spindle (L) P/N: 951 341 655 34 (R) P/N: 951 341 656 34 (Price: your first born son)
Front hub (2) P/N: 951 341 065 08 (Price: your first born daughter)
Front caliper (L) P/N: 951 351 093 00 (R) P/N: 951 351 094 00 (You get the idea)
Front rotor (L) P/N: 928 351 043 60 (R) P/N: 928 351 044 60
Mounting screws (4) P/N: 900 067 154 02
Front brake pad set, OEM (1) P/N: 993 351 939 01
Brake pad vibration damper (4) P/N: 951 351 089 04
Brake hose (2) P/N: 951 355 079 31
Brake line, (L) P/N: 951 355 041 30 (R) P/N: 951 355 042 30
Brake wear sensors (2) P/N: 944 612 365 01
Brake line clip (2) P/N: 113.611.715.A

Thanks again to Russell for providing the unobtanium parts! Now it's time to see how it does in the next AutoX and DE.

Cheers,

Keith

Look at you, and it came in ahead of schedule and under budget.

One other important bit of information for this upgrade.

The original 16" "Phone Dial" wheels will no longer work with these brake calipers, so plan on going to either the Turbo S forged "Club Sport" 16" wheels, or to some other 17" wheels.

I changed over to a set of 17" Boxter wheels at the same time as I did the upgrade, and only found out about this issue when I tried to put my old wheels back on today.

Cheers,

Keith

you could also use the 928 'manhole cover' wheels, which are forged;

Can those front brakes be mounted in the rear? I upgraded to Big Reds on my 88 Turbo S and still have the fronts sitting in a box, thought about selling but have kicked around this idea. Anyone try this?

I have heard that some people who upgraded to Big Blacks in front have taken their front non-M758 calipers and used those for the rears.

I have not done it, but the thought did cross my mind.

You cannot mount the radial mount M758 calipers in the rear, at least not without some adapters. Not sure if anyone sells those, either.

Cheers,

Keith
