wow - that looks great. i would be afraid to paint black in a garage. i would have thought there would be too much dust. on second thought i guess it doesn't matter what the color is, the dust is there no matter what. i see you lined your garage with plastic sheeting - are there any other tricks that helped?

There is dust in it, but that will sand out, The big key for us was I did all the body work, filler, primer, sanding in my garage and did the paint in my brothers garage, he kept cleaning his garage for about a week, then we let the parts sit in the garage overnight after the door was closed so not to stir up anything more, it came out cleaner than I expected, still dirt in it but not bad.

Craig, that looks pretty damn good!!!! The only other thing you might have been able to do to get the dust or dirt level down a bit more was if you gave the floor a quick squirt with the garden hose before shooting. It will settle just about take care of all the left over dust and dirt from the floor, from getting stirred up from walking around and spraying. But still... it looks great!!!

focus your camera next time, The dirt craig is talking about is so so fine that professionals haven't done this good of job. Craig is just being a little shy, He's a lot better painter than he give's himself credit for!!! Here were the first steps in garage cleaning and in the back ground the yellow targa we did last winter which was a complete repaint in and out

That is a lot of pallets. The car looks super. I did notice in one of the pictures a pretty good size cloud of paint mist in the air inside the garage while you were shooting some of the parts. I get around having that problem by using a fan that I built that fits under the garage door when it is lowered down on top of the exhaust fan assembly, and I use a house central air/heat air filter in one of the windows to allow fresh air in and let the "tainted" air to be blown out with the fan. It is sort of like a poor mans down-draft type paint booth. Using this method, along with the floor hosed down, makes for a really nice finish. Now to getting the parts back on and then some final pictures. Keep up the good work! Good luck!! Tony.

Tony, We did have an exhaust fan running at one of the side windows which helped vent the garage. I think that one picture may have been taken thru a screen door to the house thats why its kind of cloudy, I don't remember it being too hard to see, the only problem I had was that my face mask was getting static which caused the paint to stick to it at times. This setup worked out so well I now have my sons VW Golf that we are going to be doing late this summer but that will be just a mask and spray, hey its only a kids VW... I have to tell you, I don't think these body shop/paint guys make enuff money in my opinion!!

Craig, I know what you mean about the $$$$ factor. The quality of a finish takes some serious effort. It is too bad that some shops can't produce any better "paint job" than some of us can do in our garages. But... they still want the top dollar price, for less than stellar results. I think the car came out great! I would like to see more owners at least try to re-paint one of their cars at some point in time. They will then have first hand knowledge of the labor involved to get a quality finish.
About the "static cling" have you tried using one of the static ground lines? It connects you to a ground source, so you don't build up a static charge. They work nicely for this, because the tyvec type suits can generate a pretty fair amount of static electricity with all of the movement around and with the hoses and such. Keep up the super work, I know your Son will be proud of the new look!! Tony.
