Newbie

Well, now that I finally have my 911 I can introduce myself. Hello everyone, let me introduce to you my new ’89 Carrera.

My name is Orlando and a little over a year ago, as I was turning 40, I told my wife that I wanted to buy a 911. Like a lot of you guy’s before me she gave me the “no you’re not” look. So I decided to buy these books instead:

I told her, true story, that ever since I was 15 yrs old I always wanted to have one, I had ’83 SC poster in my bedroom at the time. So armed with my books I started little by little showing her the different models. Soon enough she started agreeing that they were really nice looking cars.

Few months ago I decided to go for it. She had already heard so much about them that by that time she just said “all right, just don’t kill yourself”. I’m not a race car driver, in fact I’m not even into racing cars (I have never been to a track, not yet anyway), I just like good cars. Then I started looking on the internet and I saw a beautiful Alpine white 89 for sale in the east coast, they were asking 37K for it. I had no idea if that was a fair price, so before doing anything I decided to join here and start a thread about it:

Buying 1989 911 G-50

I think it was a great idea, not only did I find out the car was severely overpriced, but the guy’s that participated in the thread walk me through the whole buying process, the specific and detailed pic’s to ask for, the “don’t do anything without” PPI, the works. Needless to say that I ended up buying exactly what I wanted for over 10K less than the asking price on the Alpine white car I saw first. For that I will be eternally grateful to Pelican members like Macroni, Kilodawg, Mike Monde and many others who participated and offered their help without ever meeting me, there’s plenty of good people here. One more time guy’s, hat’s off, THANK YOU.

So, now that I finally own one, I still can’t believe it’s mine, I ordered these books:

Wilkinson book is very good, funny and straight forward and even though it’s not a technical book it has been of some help too. I’m a writer, proofreader and translator, so mechanics it’s not my strong point. Although back in college years I used to own and do tune up's and the like in VW buses, transporters and campers, I used to surf back then. I know a VW has little to do with a 911, but there are some similarities, like flat oil cooled engines. Anyway, I don’t pretend to learn what has taken some of you a lifetime of work. I just want to be able to take good care of my car.

So, one more time, hello everyone and if I can be of any help, please don’t hesitate in asking, I would love to give some back.

Orlando

Nice story. And I agree with the others - gorgeous color and the lines of the coupe can't be beat.

Thanks guy's, the color is Linen Gray Metallic - L550, if I'm reading it right.

Car has 68K miles in it's original paint, "painfully stock" as seems to be the prefered expression here, but I intend to take care of that soon.

I recently ordered from our host a complete tune up package including Magnecor wires and a brace strut, I will be working on that as soon as I can.

Welcome Orlando. Nice color, inside and out. It is fun taking the care from 'painfully stock' to your vision of a beautiful car. Enjoy the journey.

Thanks everybody. It seems like the color changes depending on the light, direct sunlight makes it look golden, under shadow it looks silver, I love it. I think I'm developing a permanent grin.

No tails for me. Yours is a '89 Silver Anny Ed. Gorgeous interiors, I almost went for one of those.

Beauty! Welcome aboard. I see you bought the engine rebuilding book - man, you're diving right in with both feet, aren't you?! That car is beautiful - let's see some shots of the interior! I love non-black interiors.

Nice intro and beautiful car! I like what was said above "...'painfully stock' to your version of a beautiful car. Enjoy the journey."

Very true. I'll add that stock is beautiful and to take your time with her, what you may want now may change down the road.
