She's back home...With AC!!!!!!!!
![]() Well after spending several weeks in the Texas Hill Country having an AC installed, "The Duck" is back home in Dallas and blowing cold air. She spent time at the home/office of Ron Maxwell, the owner of Procooler, who refitted her with a rotary compressor, Behr evap, a new Procooler and charged the system with Freeze 12. The verdict - low 30 degree vent temps on an 85 degree day. Mondo is very happy with cold AC .The 4 hour drive back through hill country backroads was a blast with crusing speeds between 85 - 95 and occasional jaunts north of 110. My ride down and caravan back was my buddy Ed, in his pristine '77 280Z. Muchas gracias Eddie. ![]() Here is a pic of the Duck next to Kemo's Ruf wheeled SC at Ron's shop. Ron is doing a repaint on Kemo's ride.

I am sure that you have one of the few SC's with cold air. I yanked mine out!
Are you sure the Z is a 77? I had a 78 that had the 'vents' on the hood and if I remember right that was the first year for the vent. Might be wrong. I loved the Z. Couldn't afford a Porsche so I bought the Z. I drove the hell out of it and had a great time! Looks like you are on I35 heading north toward Reunion and downtown. I don't think I have ever been on that road with that little traffic....damn, I hate the mixmaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last edited by philfran; 04-27-2003 at 01:51 PM.. |

Seadweller rebuilt the A/C in the '78SC. When I used the A/C a few weeks ago (sunny and 80 degrees), low fan speed and highest thermostat setting made the car absolutely freezing. I'm hoping that translates into comfortable temps during 100 degree days with 75% relative humidity.
Sure, I cannot see my engine very well with A/C compressor in the way, but I can cruise in style during the hot Memphis summers. ![]() Jürgen |

ok, I'm sold. What all did you do to it? My system needs a charge (hasn't worked since I bought it), and I suspect I might want to go to a new compressor (it is still original).

I have a 1983SC which the previous owner installed a rotary compressor,it uses the factory condensor on the hood and the fan assisted condensor up front, running R12 in 85 degree temps in Florida I have to turn the AC fan down to the #1 or 2 setting after about 20 minutes of driving. Now sitting in traffic is a different story but once there is some air flow it works just fine.

Congrats . . . its been a long wait, but the Procooler came through. Post some pics of the procooler in place when you get a chance. Cheers.

Mark,
Glad to see it worked. One of the nice things about Freeze 12 or EZ-12 is that the molecules are larger than those of R-12 or R-134 and it does not seem to leak out as easy, especially with those of us who still have old hoses. I am getting ready to help JR switch his system over to EZ-12 here in Phoenix and have been very happy with it in my car. Nostatic, you do not need to change anything but if you have the old York compressor you should try to find a newer rotary version. The "mix" type of gasses work well when either alone or if you need to put a shot in a R-12 system that is only low. Its a compressable gas, just like R-12, just at $5 a can. You can find it on Ebay for reasonable prices. Only problem is that some A/C shops do not like to use it but if you call around you can find those that will. Joe

I figured a rotary was the first step. I've also got a case of DuraCool 12a (www.duracool.com)...I've just got to find someone that can charge the system using it. Perhaps this is an EZ-12 equivalent?

The rotary is just smoother and lighter and a better pump. I know guys who still use the old York but not many.
Bet it is the same stuff. The "mix" type of gasses are mostly the same from what I found when researching it last year. Its a mix of gasses that are available and work much the same as R-12. If you lived closer to Phoenix I would be glad to help. I have a vacuum pump and gauges. Would bet that there is someone in the SoCal area that has the tools and experience. Joe

Thats incorrect . The first year for the vents was 1977.

Joe,
I am back in town and do you want to get together to talk about compressors?

Hi guys and girls,
The system is stock cept for the rotary kompressor and the Procooler receiver dryer. Here's a couple of pics. ![]() The system operates beautifully, but I still want to do a Kuele(sp) vent type mod to help extract more air and be able to direct it better. The side to side directional air diverters are missing from my center vents, so I couldn't direct the air at my face, but I still stayed very comfortable for the 250 mile trip back home. The only snag was that the evap fan from the used unit we installed took a dump just inside the Dallas city limits. Oh the joys of buying used stuff. Anyway, bottom line is that I have cold air with the addition of the rotary kompressor and Procooler. Since my old system was non-op, there was no way to do a side by side test, but I am confident that the Procooler does increase the cooling ability of the system. The Z car is a '77. Ed has owned it since 1980. |

Mark,
Would love to do a "side by side" compare of two cars, one with the pro-cooler and one without. The compressor looks very nice! Bob, Out flying now, back home late Monday or Tuesday. Give a ring or drop a note, should be home next weekend but may be going to the Jag get together in Scottsdale. Joe

That rotary pump looks much smaller than the York pump? I have read other threads saying that the rotary is the way to go for lower temps. I will have to put that on my list of things to modify.
