Question cooling fan relay

I am currently trouble shooting why one of my cooling fans is not working(even with AC on--only one fan) It seems to be the relay. The problem is, when I turn on the AC, I get a burning odor and small amount of smoke from the relay/fuse panel (All of the fuses are good). Is this a sign of a bad relay. There is no odor without the AC on.

did you swap the fan connectors to be sure the fan is good?

if yes...then prolly relay's coil windings are starting to 'short out'

I didn't swap the wires yet, but I checked the conections and they are still good.

I had a burnt odor coming from my fuse box but nothing was wrong ...stupid electronics. I would say check the fuses again. hehe

When you go to replace your relay, be aware that the factory documentation is wrong.

Most parts places will sell you the wrong relay. In fact, if somebody has replaced the fan relay with the factory reccomended part, that could be why only 1 fan is running.

pull the 1st and 3rd relays http://www.frwilk.com/early944/misc/relay.htm

Grab a flashlight, and count the copper contacts inside the 1st and 3rd sockets. The first socket should have 6 contacts, the correct relay part number is: 944.615.113.01 The 3rd socket should have 4 contacts. the proper relay part number for the 3rd position is 141.951.253B

The factory documentation has these relays switched. The reason i say count the contacts, is that it could have been a mid-model change in the early cars. I know of at least 4 cars (mine included) that the above information is correct. BUT.......it is possible that in very early cars the factory documentation is correct. Please reply with what you find out. I am trying to figure out whether the documentation is wrong for all early cars, or just a select group of early cars.

I just ordered the relay from pelican yesterday. It should be here in a few days. I'll let you know when it gets here. For the record, I ordered the part number 141.951.253B, like the manual said. Thanx for the info.

I just ordered the other relay just to be safe. I might as well replace them both while I am down there.

I have both relays???... got the new one from the porsche dealer part #141 951 253 B
the old one is 944.615.113.01
the parts guy showed me his book that showed the 141 951 253 B as the correct relay for my cars cooling fan to answer my question as to why it was not the same as the old relay...

I have not used the new one until now that I suspected thet my old one was bad when the fan stopped working, I am going to get a new 944.615.113.01 and I bet that all will work fine when I do...the 141 951 253 B is used elsewhere as well so it won't go to waste
and I am still going to install my own SPAL emergency and very hot day fan on the front of the radiator to be controlled from the cockpit!
I am looking for a 12 volt power source right now to test this !$#^&*? relay

Try Radio Shack. You can get a real nice 12 Volt regulated power supply for about $17. Uses wall outlet and you get your choice of tips.

got the new correct relay for #1 - 615 113 01 installed it still no drivers side fan at any time?
except both fans will now run with the a/c on ( I found a loose wire at the fan plug that was preventing contact to the passenger side fan)
key off = no fan
