Are the nuts holding the tranny to the motor still on tight? If they aren't, put them back on. If they are loose it will cause things to bind up. The bolt I use to pull the shaft out is long enough for me to get a pair of pliers on it. The extra leverage may be all you need.

When I removed mine I needed to loosen the slave cylinder to get the release shaft out. Once the slave is loose, don't press the clutch pedal or you might blow out the seal.

Oh yeah, and don't drop any of the bushes or nuts into the access hole or you'll be pulling the engine out again... I only make mistakes like htese once!

Just in case anyone else in the future goes through what you and I did, I would suggest making a puller out of an M15 socket that you probably have sitting in your toolbox, a long bolt, some washers and a nut! If you screw the bolt into the shaft and then start tightening the nut the shaft will pop out. I will post some pictures tomorrow of my improvised tool (have to rebuild it first. ) It definitely beats dremel tooling the release fork! Up until I actually tried removing the shaft I had no idea why no one had documented the procedure...
