Does anyone know if the r or s wheels will just bolt up to a GS?

Jimjib - I think its time for you to get an R1100S. Admittedly the guy who got me interested in bikes in the first place regarded the GS as the best bike he ever owned (I think he had 13 bikes) and I was very impressed with it. I didn't get one because it lacked a true sporty appearance - imagine my joy when the R1100S came out! Boxer engine, telelever etc but in a bike that has a more sporty orientation. Go for it!

NB - as for the wheels question hmm my Wunderlich catalog has different wheels for the R bikes and each type of wheel appears to have different R model variants and prices. The S has 4 nuts on the rear wheel mounting - doesnt the GS have 5?

Rattus, sorry to bother you s guys with this GS stuff but you folks seem to know what you are talking about and I just like this board set up lot better than then the one GS mailing list if seen... and besides,
Pdonnell would miss me terribly. There also was mixed emotions (when I asked the question) as to which bike actually cornered better in the real world so for the short term, I think I will stay with the GS and just massage it a bit...maybe a turbo.

My rear wheel has 4 bolts so I don't think there is a problem at that end but the front, I'm not at all sure about. The guy is selling the R wheels (with tires) for $600.00 with no rotors...does that seem reasonable?

I saw a picture somewhere on the web of a GS with S wheels on it. Can't remember where but it would appear that they are interchangable. I bet the spoked ones are stronger though!

Hey Jimjib,

There's a BMW shop owner/racer here in Japan who uses the 'S' rear wheel on his R1150GS. He uses the stock front wheel however (I don't remember which front tire he uses [it is a street legal tire], but he maintains there are no problems with it while track riding and racing [Boxer Trophy...Likely the only GS in the race]). He also races a CRM (street legal, dual-sport CR)in the >249cc Terminator class (SuperMotard class) so he has racing experience.

Hi;

Harold is right; the guy does live in San Jose.The cost to do the change over came to a little over $1,500..Most of the cost was the wheels and the machine work to make them fit.

This guy is a real nice and has a lot of money..He also had the cases split to balance the crank and connecting rods and pistons.

Good luck

Rick

I have seen a picture of a GS with S wheels. Knowing BMW they probably bolt straight in. It would be much cheaper to get the hubs relaced but then you would probably have to use tubes. The best place I know of for GS info is www.micapeak.com. There is also a good S section in the registry www.micapeak.com/reg/bikes/

I'm sure you will check things out before spending any money but I would just like to emphasize; Don't Assume Anything! I failed to follow that advice when I bought my S and assumed the 5.5" wheel on my K1200RS would fit on the S. It seemed to me a logical assumption...NOT!!!!!
