bad vibration update

Got a call from the shop today... I'd dropped my car off because of a bad vibration at 75-80 MPH. I did replace the driver's side axle because the outer CV had the bolts worked loose, and also the boot was badly dry rotted and cracked. This axle was less than a year old. There was absolutely no change between before and after I swapped the axle. The guy at the shop says he definitely felt the vibration and that tightening the CV joint bolts made it go away. Does this sound reasonable? I think they were a little undertorqued because I was using an Allen wrench and didn't want to haul on them too much but still... I have not picked the car up yet as nobody was home today to give me a ride to the shop :/

Also should the CV joints have a gasket between the CV and the flange? These do, and I can't hardly see how that wouldn't encourage the bolts to work loose. Finally is there any parts store chain that carries the triple square tool, I've lost mine AGAIN and don't need to order any parts at the moment...

thanks,

nate

- gasket between CV and flange ... no
- Tightening with an allen wrench .... no use a socket triple square and torque them to spec
- vibration at 80 due to this........ uhmmm maybe but not likely. I am sure you would here quite a racket from a loose CV. Specially during load.

I think Pep Boys carries the triple square bits, but they're not attached to sockets. Its a bit annoying, but they're inexpensive and they work.
