I found the bird in the rear!
ok guys... took the wheel off today, had some help with a buddy and a garage... I'm going to need some help with the names of some of these things though. I looked it up in the catalog and cant *quite* pick out exactly what I'm looking for. This is where you all come in....
and please excuse my lack of part vocabulary... The problem exists in the extension of the axel *after* the CV joint and between the wheel.. I dont know what this 'extension' of the axle is technically called.... (it's the one with the teeth / notches on the tip of it (toward the wheel).. Well, those notches have worn down... ground out actually... so I'll need that new 'extension' piece... that's one. I'll need a pair of bearings (apparently there's two sets - one on either side of the rotor or hub (not sure)?) so I'll need *those*... that's two, three. I'll need the spacer that fits between them - that's four. and finally I believe I'll need the part that 'extension' axle fits into (where the teeth are ground down - this part has the matching teeth ground out too...).. and that's five. lil help with the names? and if anyone here is willing to rip their car apart and give me a good price? I'm a college student and have been unemployed for 2 months - i need a break! lol I'm only half kidding here... I'll pony up some funds (but free offers will always be accepted first! lol) ![]() so.... hit me with your best shot!

go to www.clarksgarage.com look under garage shop manual, rear wheel bearing replacement. There's a picture of all the parts and names. the extension is called a stub axle what it goes into is the wheel hub. the axle nut must be torqued to 350 ft.lbs.

ok so I'd need (all for drivers side, but i dont think it makes a difference)
-stub axle -inner and outer bearing -spacer tube and the part that the tip of the stub axle (part with teeth) locks into (the part that makes direct contact with the teeth... did I understand you correctly to say this was the wheel hub?

ya i saw those pics, that's how i was able to confirm the "needs" in my last list.
because i cant tell from the pic (again with ignorance on my behalf) my question is, what is the part that comes in direct contact with the teeth on the stub axle? and just going by memory, because my buddy put the wheel back together yesterday so i could roll it home until i get the parts... I'm 99.9% sure its the steel one.. mine being an 83, is there a way to tell if i have aluminium or steel with the wheel back together? (you'd think i would have written it down or something when he was explaining everything to me at the time..)

You are going to need a stub axle, hub, outer roller bearing, inner ball bearing, seals, o-ring, spacers, a castle nut and a cotter pin. The second parts picture is the one for the early cars. Steel swing arms.
If you get used parts make sure they are not worn out like yours. Clean out the swing arm. Leaving any metalic contamination will get back into the new bearings and the whole mess with happen again. Check the other side too. Hardened seals let water into the bearings. The "bird" sound is the rusted bearings siezed on the stub axle. The "wobble" is the loose nut on the stub axle.

So Cal, I dont see you around much anymore, but it's nice to see that you've given me probably the best help with this so far - not to discount you tg, you've both been a huge help.
I'll make the BST post now.. any word on parts for non-944 specific cars having the same setup? I've got wind that VW and Mercedes used elements much the same as the early 944...

axles
I changed my clutch awhile back. While I had it apart I was going to repack my rear wheel bearings. It came apart like there was an inner and outer bearing, but come to find out it is a one peice bearing, with a bearing on each side of the race. It's supposed to be one piece. Mine came out in several peices which i thought was 2 seperate beariings. I think the older models actually have 2 bearings. While you have it apart it would be wise to clean and repack your cv joints

bump up... but not to seem impatient, I'm gonna re-ask a question... what is the part called that comes in direct contact with the teeth on the stub axle? (the part with the corrosponding teeth)...

The 944 was there back at the begining of November with only the brakes removed, suspension and drive shafts were still attached. They may have moved it but you will have to search for it anyway. Make the effort, get dirty and you can save big! You can call Porschapart (416-798-9598) at the other end of the city at Steeles and Hwy #27 they specialize in dismantling Porsche cars. The advantage is that they will get the parts off the donor car for you but they use a formula to arrive at the sale price and that may NOT be what you consider cheap, info is always good to have. Cheers!
