Project "alpinen Wolf" Official Thread

Planen Sie "alpinen Wolf" is off and running.

First off... what's with the name?!?

Well, I've always thought of sleeper cars as sort of "wolves in sheeps' clothing". People don't know what to expect from a sleeper unless they know what's under the hood, and they usually won't assume it's a serious highway predator...

Besides, to me, the 944-series cars have always had a vaguely canine aesthetic to them. It all started when I one day came across a photo of a 944 club racer cresting a hill and getting airborne; the photo reminded me of an eager dog frolicking. In any case, 944s have always had a vaguely canine bent to them, in my eyes...

So here we have the obvious jump in logic - a sleeper 944 should, in my humble opinion, be known as a "wolf". Hear that, ae1969, ccypher, shikzachaser, etc.? Your cars are now "wolves". Since my car is alpine white, it is der alpinen wolf .

Okay, now that's out of the way...

I took a nice little drive to the Albany area to pick up a recent purchase...

More to come.

Planen Sie "alpinen Wolf"

That's right; I just picked up a 951 short block in very good condition, which I just yesterday purchased from Autobahn in Albany, NY. The car was being sold because its donor car is going to be the recipient of a 3.0 Turbo monster engine.

"short block" is actually a misnomer in this case, because (much to my surprise), included was much more than just the block:

Obviously, the piston/crank hardware is all-included, as are the pulleys and most of the sensors...

The cyllinder walls are spotless (and score-less), and the head studs look to be perfect. Another nice surprise was that the engine had a rebuild within the last 10K miles or so. The sellers advised me that a rebuild isn't necessary - and I quote - "unless I plan on cranking the boost over 20."

More to come...

"alpinen Wolf"

Another nice surprise was that part of the package I got a 951 head that the shop had no need for and just wanted to get rid of. It is from a different car...

The reason the shop didn't need the head was because it was the victim of a timing belt break and one of the valves is bent (see the last pic). This head did not, I repeat, did not come off the 951 block I bought.

I am not sure yet whether I will use this head (buy a new valve, get it refinished+ cleaned) or if I will buy a new one. It is one of the many decisions I will need to make.

Well, here I am. I realized that the best/easiest way to make a truly fast car out of my 944 was to go turbo, so I bought the basis of a great turbo engine.

Now what?

I have an engine stand on the way, so as soon as that comes I will give the block a decent cleaning. I will be looking for a cam tower, turbo and associated pipes/manifolds, exhaust, etc... But I am sure I will need plenty of help to even get this project started.

Basically, I would like to build an engine that can stand alone, so that I can drive my 944 while I work on this project. After the heart transplant is completed, I will probably part out my NA engine. I would like to get as close as possible to completing my 951 engine before I make the swap, although I am not adverse to using assorted parts from the NA engine (alternator, etc).

What is the best guide to use in this engine-building process?

Where should I even begin? Advice is very welcome

I might have a line on getting all the 951 piping/tubing/ducting in one package, including a turbo. I will let you know how it goes.

Fast, i will definitely need help with this. I'm not ashamed to admit it. You are welcome to come over any time, even if it's just to shoot the $hit and have a couple beers.

Getting Help Already!

I just had a "chat" with old pal mike944, who pretty much hand-built his 968's engine (at least that's my understanding of it ).

mike944: "Here's where i would start:

Do you have a clear plan for at least all the major items?

I mean:
air filter to compressor plumbing
post-compressor plumbing to head
turbo (stock 951, or not, is it sized correctly?)
Location to place turbo (heat shielding if necessary)
plumbing from head to turbine
turbine outlet to exhaust pipes
rest of the exhaust system (stock or upgraded)
wastegate & plumbing
coolant lines to turbo (not all turbos use coolant lines)
oil to turbo
oil from turbo (if turbo is mounted low, then probably an oil scavenge pump)
Fuel enrichment under boost conditions, and timing retard (this one is one of the harder ones, unless you're frwilk!!) "

Well, I think I will go stock configuration on mostly everything for now, and I might have a line on a deal that has a turbocharger, all piping, and all manifolds in one package.

I will upgrade where it makes sense (exhaust). Otherwise, I will treat this project like I am putting a 951 engine BACK INTO a 951 car, comprimising where I have to (I am going to have to have someone fabricate a wiring harness for me, I know that much).

As far as fuel/air... I am completely clueless when it comes to car computers. I would assume a stock 951 DME/AFM would be the quickest/easiest choice for now, although it looks like it might not be the cheapest nor the most performance-oriented.

I have work to do. But I am a fast learner and very motivated and ambitious.

What else do I have to consider? Whether or not I should re-use parts from my NA is one factor.

One thing I should do is make a comprehensive (read: LONG) list of parts I need to get.

Oh, the work I have ahead of me.

Hopefully ya got deep pockets and long arms, these projects really add up. They are defintely worth it though. There is nothing like the satisfaction of creativity, plus you get a bit...in ride out of it. Just start with a plan so you only do things once.

Oooooh... Great find CJ. I don't have any experience working with engines, but I do have a socket set and a spare alternator belt, 2 free hands, and a thirst for beer. Not sure how much that helps, but the point is if you need an extra set of hands when you start let me know.

Relax? Are you talking to me? I am not nervous or anxious at all... it just seems that there are so many options/ways to do this, that I don't really even know where to begin.

Won't even need to drink if we close all the doors and windows and act very liberally with the parts cleaner
