Search here for Jim Sims excellent explanation of both how the system works and how he installed a new system on a mid-year 911 with outstanding success.

If your plan is to use the AC equipment from your 65 and expect it to work in Aus. I'm afraid you will be sweating like a pig. There is a lot of aftermarket AC parts available that can make a AC system that will freeze you out but it takes $$$ and time.

I haven't installed AC in an pre-69 type 911 but I doubt the '65 911 compressor mount brackets and crank pulley would work with the 912 engine (356C engine?) and I recall a fatigue life problem with the "SC" crank used in these engines. Adding the fatigue loading of an A/C compressor to this crank would at least give me pause. I suspect you need to find the engine related A/C parts from a 356 to install A/C in a 912. The only thing I would consider using from the '65 A/C set-up would be the fender mounted condenser and rock shield (if it has one) but even then the whole system if in good shape may be worth more to someone who wants to restore a '65 911 to period correct A/C. If I were given this project I'd duplicate the 356 engine mount in aluminum and use a '73 or later Porsche 911 factory underdash duct unit and Behr evaporator/blower unit with a modern evaporator in it. I would also use new reduced barrier hose and aluminum hose fittings to help keep the weight and bulk down. Further, I would use a modern condensers and perhaps the very smallest Sanden compressor. See the below link for other links to early Porsche A/C.

912UK,
In a word - don't bother ! You will be spending good money for little result. Ask me how I know! Its well known that all 911/912s up to '86 were not body engineered to accomodate effective air conditioning. Keep your car for non commuter drives and get a Corolla with icy a/c as a daily driver. Cheers, Dennis. ![]()

Yep, don't waste money. The previous owner of my 69T spent $6000 AUD to set up A/C in the car including a modern (Sander) compressor and extra condensor. It was always crap, and I have now removed it all.
I live in Queensland which is much hotter and humid than Perth, it's just not that bad to drive without A/C. Use the quarter vents to set up a nice flow through and maybe carry a spritzer bottle of water ![]() Seriously don't bother with airconditioning an old 911/912. Save the money for petrol!

Actually, the A/C in the pre-86 911's can be made to work well if the update/refurbishment is done properly. It will cost though: US$1000 to US$4000 depending upon where the project starts from.

It seems as though you are going to fit this a/c. My advise would be to put the condenser up in the left front wheel arch ( about the same place as the later 911's have the oil cooler just on the other side of the car) and fit a thermo fan to it as the fan on your 912 will not pull enough air through it to have any cooling effect. Alternately you could fit the condensor under the front bumperbar so that you have air through it when moving. Somebody else has said it a/c on the early cars is next to useless here in OZ but good luck.
Richard.

The RennAire systems work well. Pelican sells them here:

Yes good luck with the project, but just to clarify...
My 911 had 2 condensers fitted (one in the left rear wheelarch with fan and one in the rear deck lid), the latest Sander compressor, latest A/C lines, and new gas. This is arguably the best set up for the older cars. Useless ![]() The other thing to consider over here is that we are not allowed by law to use R12 (the good stuff), we can only use R13a which is not as efficient. This compounds the problem. Seriously, get your cars over here and at least do a summer without A/C before committing to the expense. If you think it's truly unbareable, then by all means do it. PS, You'll love Perth, it's a beautiful place.

Did you end up doing this "little" project? How'd it go? Moved to Perth yet?
