1958 356A 1600S Speedster race car
1958 356A 1600S Speedster Ex SCCA E-Production Race Car
Chassis Number: 84562 Original exterior color: Ivory, currently off white with blue stripes Original interior color: Black with Oatmeal carpets, currently painted gray with late race seat. This is an old race car that has been left in as-found condition technology-wise, lots of patina on the body. It is currently registered with original Black California license plates, non-operational status. The car hasn’t been raced for 18 years. History: Original owner was well known race car driver Rick Muther. Rick started to race the car with SCCA in 1960. Later Rick went on to race Indy in the late 60’s up until 1980. In 1963 he sold the car to John Buntrock. John raced the car until the late 70’s with SCCA. I bought the car in 1986, ran POC events and raced it with VARA until 1989. Body: All original body panels in steel, no rust, the car had 50k on it when it was made into a race car. Full roll cage welded in, mandrel bent tubing, nuke certified welder. No windshield, seats, top or bumpers. Rear fenders were flared by making radial cuts in the fenders, spreading the metal, pop riveting in patch panels and smoothing over with filler, home made quality. Air ducts ran from both headlights over the front wheels thru the fender closeout panels, thru the interior to the engine which was not running a fan when I bought the car. I removed the left duct and installed an oil cooler in the left headlight bucket area. Body has no rust anywhere but it does have numerous dents in the floors from off track excursions. There is body filler throughout the body as it was a race car not a garage queen. There are numerous holes in the body that were made over the years to run oil lines and air ducts. Parking brake and front and rear lid releases were removed. Rain tray was removed from the rear engine lid. Original speedometer, combo gauge, tachometer is electric with an 8k Carrera face. After market steering wheel is installed. Running gear: C disk brakes front and rear, no parking brakes, front control arms are boxed, spindles are de-cambered with new bushings, stainless flex lines, single circuit master cylinder. Heavy front sway bar and rear springs, Koni shocks. Original dated fuel tank is still in the car. Original transmission with 2B3E3B4A gears with 7:31 ring and pinion. Transmission is currently out of the car, I will install shortly. Dry sump oil system with custom made oil scavenge pump, AN fittings with Earl’s supply front cooler. Car comes with late 6 x 15 Fuchs wheels, original finish. Engine: The car will come with a fresh race engine, all machine work was done by Competition Engineering. Fully ported 912/C heads with Datsun intake valves, titanium retainers and double springs. 912 case is STD with a STD/STD C crank, 912 rods and .040 over forged Arias pistons. Ignition is a 031 distributor. Spares: Original Speedster windshield frame and posts are included, the cowl trim is on the car. Many original parts removed from the car are included, like heater controls, release mechanisms and dash trim. Offers over $80k. ![]() ![]() |

Speedster trade
I'm willing to take a 356A coupe as partial trade if somebody has a solid coupe out there. Needs to be a real solid car, don't care about the motor.
Thanks KD |
