resistor pack for blower motor?

Hi all...

I posted about this last week but it wasn't until today that I had a chance to look for the thing... only thing I see that might be right looks like it's actually mounted in the air duct, toward the driver's side of the car, is this right? if so how do I get it out? looks like I have to remove the wipers to remove the plastic shield to get access to the screws alternately I need to go get a right angle screwdriver, before I start ripping stuff apart, am I looking at the right piece? It'd be nice to have speeds other than "off" and "gale force."

thanks,

nate

I'll try to find it in the PET for you Nate. Too bad the PET is a PDF and you can't "find" key words! But it's raining and COLD here so I am looking for some things to keep me busy and out of trouble.

you won't believe this but I envy you... if it were "rainy and cold" here I would be a happy camper! (and I wouldn't be worried about my A/C not working either)

No kidding. The whole country has a heat wave and we have a high of 84F for next week! We are usually in the mid 90's right now with 99% humidity. It's been a great summer so far!

This is what I find for you on the PET. Not sure if it's the same part, but I think it is. It looks like it's located near the blower motor under the hood inbetween the two fire walls. The pic of the part is just floating alone in the diagram. By the looks of it, it should have a decent size wire harness running to it. If you have the PET it's Part #13 in Illustration 813-05 with a part number of 944.616.101.00.

Hopefully this link will help you to verify the part. I hope you don't have to buy a new one! They are EXPENSIVE! I can't help you much on the exact location or how to get it out. Sorry.

that sure looks like what I was looking at. I'll have to pull it later today and ohm it out. Figures that it is silly expensive, I might have to do something custom with generic power resistors if it is really toast.

thanks for looking BTW, I spent most of the afternoon yesterday trying to catch up on maintenance on my "new" pickup, still need to change the gear oil, ATF, and brake fluid, and I just realized that I forgot to grease the splines in the driveshaft while I was under there with the grease gun...

Good luck Nate and keep us posted on your progress! If it is "toast" I would post a WTB message over in the classified section. So many cars get parted out and I would guess very few people snag that part before the car goes to the wrecker. You could prob get one cheap. Someone nice might sell it to you for $25 or so. Good luck!

That looks like the part he is looking for. They have a pic on here in their catalog with what looks to be a black cover on the back of it.

How did you get it out? He had some questions about that. And he may need to replace it. Do you have one for sale? If so, how much?

It mounts resistor side down with the plug(black cover) face up. The blower fans cover has about 8 screws and its under there.

I did take out the wiper motor and pivot arms first but i dont recall that having to be done first.

Its on ebay for $3.44 starting bid,i'll pull the item if he wants it. $20 shipping included.

wow, all this effort just to identify a part! thanks guys... well I just ran to Sears and bought me an offset screwdriver, pulled the resistor pack, and found nothing wrong! all resistors ohmed out, and resistance between the pins appeared to increase progressively as you worked from one end to the other. So I just cleaned it up a little and put it back in, and it appears to be working fine. Who knows? maybe a little invisible corrosion on the connector or something that came off when I R&R'd the plug, so I'll just assume it's good until if gives me more grief.

I'm glad this was a cheap and easy "fix" although I'm still not sure what I did!

Prob right about the corrision. They make a grease you can put in there to prevent it from happening again, but it sounds like you have it back together already.

I thought about putting some Sil-Glyde in there but I wondered if it would hold up to the heat.

Now that I think about it it should have; I use it on spark plug boots all the time with no problems. I believe that it's pretty much the same stuff as what is sold as "dielectric grease" but it comes in 4 and 8 oz. tubes so you don't have to keep running back to the store I use the crap out of it on older cars...

I have been using it on all my bulbs that I have been replacing. I have only been getting the little packs. They must be making a mint selling those little things!
