Anyone got any questions on Project 9 - Air / Oil Separator for your 986 Boxster, 987 Boxster, Cayman, Carrera 996, or Carrera 997?

So I've read through your article about the AOS project and it seems straightforward mechanically but I do have some questions.
1. The project only discussed one AOS but from other posts and from your parts page seems to be (2). One on top of the engine, one in the oil sump. Please explain. 2. You mention an upgrade hose but I don't see it in the parts section you can buy. 3. You mention a special tool to be able to take one of the clamps off, I don't see it in the parts section either. Thank you in advance. |

I would like to know a few things about air oil separators. I would like to avoid the $800 or $1300 for the "motorsports" aos if I can help it. I was looking at the regular 987 Cayman one which goes for $90 and the 996 one that goes for $124. What makes up the $30 difference? Is the 996 one better made? they both seem to have 996 part numbers but with slight variations. Thanks
996-107-026-51-M100 : for the 996 (02-05) : $124 996-107-026-01-M100 : for the 987 : $90 In the pictures, they look exactly the same. ![]()

The confusion comes when Porsche mechanics / repair shops / dealers introduce the *** Oil Separator (internal) found in the section called ... Porsche Boxster 986 engine lubrication ... on the Porsche Boxster 986 parts diagram. Replacing the Oil Separator (internal) requires 6 or more hours of labor. If the Oil Separator (internal) is leaking, your Boxster will produce an ongoing Military-Grade Smokescreen that shouts for repair. Fortunately, the Oil Separator (internal) is rarely replaced according to Bill @ Pelican on 10-FEB-23. Summary: Replace the AOS when necessary according to Wayne's recommendations. Don't replace the Oil Separator (internal) unless your Boxster is smoking like a chimney! |
