WRX made me look silly

Please don't read this if you don't approve of "kill stories" or street light racing. My intention for posting is purely for entertainment purposes (similar to my reasons for owning a p-car in the first place). Anyway, I don't race that often, but a seemingly nice fellow asked me (while stopped at a light) to give my 911 some juice on take-off to see how his latest performance mods on his 2002 Subie WRX stack up. Well, I think he must have had a pretty good idea beforehand, because he slaughtered me. After approximately a 1/2 mile run, I finally caught up to him, shutting down the motor and stepping out of his car. He was chuckling a little, too. I'm a good sport, so we stood for awhile chatting about our rides. He's a p-car fan, but LOVES his WRX. Tells me he spent $5200 + install at Cobb Tuning for a stage III kit. Timed runs for his car are 4.4 seconds to 60mph and 12.6 seconds at 105mph in the 1/4 mile. All for an out-the-door price of $30K. They're not the prettiest cars, but they sound great--and the modded WRX's are unbeatable in that price range. I have never seen a car launch with that kind of energy (thanks to AWD, I'm sure)...

My neighbor has one with a whole bunch of mods already. He claims just about 300hp now and after he took me for a ride, I believe it. What a rocket when the turbo gets going . I have a bunch of mods on my 88 saab turbo and, can't get even close his car.

i wouldnt feel silly... back in my informative years my 400Hp muscle car (69 Dodge Dart GTS) might do low 12's on a good day... thats a lot of juice... your p-car is a totally different animal... i wouldn't even try to compare it to a 2002 subaru...

It isn't that complicated - I have always been under the impression that 150hp/litre is pretty easy from a modern Japanese turbocharged car. So don't feel too bad if he has better power/weight.

Thus, he probably has a minimum of 300hp - in fact the stage III bit could mean 350hp or perhaps a little more (tough to get more than that from a WRX without spending big $$$, I think).

Much the same as a 930 responds to a freer exhaust and more boost and colder intake, so does a WRX - it is just that the parts are cheap by comparison.

http://cobbtuning.com/wrx/powerpackage3.html

I note no power level claims. I had a quick look at their forum and they are insinuating more like 350hp.

Just remember, to even things up, all you need is more HP.
For him to even things up, his car needs a new body style and manufacturer.
WRX's look like boxes. In fact, they look like *****. At least Surpras, and 3rd Gen Rx-7s have decent styling. Half the menace of mid 90s Supra is the fact that it l o o k s pretty racey.

I got beaten by a souped up 5.0 stang the other night. He had racing slicks, no frills but big exhaust...it was a killer car no doubt. License plate holder said "Tough to beat this....Evil Picnics" or something.

I was off and ahead by 5 feet through first and 2nd up to 60mph, but when I went to 3rd, he passed me and dumped me and kept going.

No doubt, it was faster than any mustang, new or old, I have encountered so far...
And just a day before, a new Cobra changed lanes beside and punched it, and I outran him, fending him off completely. He honked and said "I love fast cars" later on...I would rate this 'stang probably faster than the cobra, although the cobra and I did not go at it from a stand still, but from a hover in 2nd gear.

My car is faster than ever. I can say, against the 'stang, I ran a 5.6 0-60...in fact, the FACT is, I'm so focused on 0-60, I don't actually know what to do when I reach the end of 2nd...I guess if I had anticipated and been used to going to third, I could have maybe done better..but he'd have zoomed after my RPMS ran out in 2nd anyway..regardless of how I went into third.

What else could i do but give the 5.0 the thumbs up at the next light and go on my merry way. It was a screamer.

Mustangs are great drag cars but terrible handling cars and with the plethora of speed parts available it's not uncommon to see 10-11 sec Mustangs running around but they'll never out corner your P-car. I think the WRX is about the same. Besides you were going non-turbo against turbo both with relatively small displacement, let him take on a 930 and see who gets spanked. The truth is a good handling suspension is terrible for drag racing and a good drag suspension is impossible to corner with. We P-car owners with our 30 year old technology losing to new cars probably feel no worse than the old hemi/bigblock guys losing to Mustangs and Grand Nationals a few years back. I'll start to worry when a naturally aspirated small displacement car can smoke my old P-car in a straight line AND around a corner. Besides that look at old Vettes, most people love them because well they have timeless beauty, just like the 911 series. The WRX and others don't have that charactor.

Come and play in Australia sometime - the WRX's have been one the biggest selling cult cars down here for 6 or 7 years. 99% are modded and they LOVE to play with Porsches.

A friend has a 280hp kit (about US$2000 - all pretty minor bolt ons) and it could toast my old 88 Carrera in a straight line. However, my 370hp KREMER 930 can eat his rex alive (and with only 4 moonshot gears)

ps: They understeer quite a bit on the track without serious mods

There was a very good article in the ’01 March issue of Automobile comparing a 2001 996 C4 to a 01 WRX. Here is a small part of that article I found very interesting. Enjoy.

LOL

Actually, I love the WRX due to it obvious and real connection to Subaru's WRC rally cars and have toyed with the idea of buying one as a companion to Gray Wolf!

An interesting historical footnote: there used to be a car company back in the 1960s/70s who sold road cars based very closely upon their race cars. I forget the name, but I think it starts with a 'P' ........ -- Curt

Curt? Surely you mean PONTIAC...with their "Royal Oak" "bobcat kit" (and slightly more) drag cars. Man...to have actually been able to see Woodward Ave. during it's glory days...

12.6 seconds at 105 mph?!?! sounds like someone needs better gearing, he was probably also in 4th gear at the end of the 1/4
well it is technically a rally car where shorter gears are needed (also a reason he "spanked" you).
one thing to remember though.......it's still a subaru

Nope. That's not it. I think this P company raced at places like LeMans, Sebring, Targa Florio, Nurburgring, etc. What IS that name? It's right on the tip of my tongue .... -- Curt

In other words, Curt, you are saying that YOUR "P car" company went the way MY "P car" company (of my youth) went? Golly shucks. Maybe both went where they thought the money was/is...And today? That is..SUV! Pontiac? Porsche? Other than location? Well.......Think about it, OK?

In all honesty, you need forced induction to keep up with those guys, along with the GTR & Supra boys. A NA 911 just won't cut it I'm afraid.

Weren't you going to trade the 3.2 in for a WRX Vic?
