Oil on coils and around plugs: PLEASE HELP!!!
Greetings All,
I've had a 2003 1.8 5-speed Passat for a couple years. It's my daily and love driving it. I decided to change the plugs, coils and a few other bits. When pulling out the first coil (closest to the bumper) it came out dripping with oil. The same thing happened when I pulled the 2nd coil. I stopped right there and have NOT pulled any plugs. Is this common?? Could oil have spilled over into plug/coil cylinder when pouring oil into the engine? Do I dare remove the plugs?? Your help would be very much appreciated. Regards, Bill PS: Before pulling the coils the car ran fine.

Hi Bill, the seals that go around the spark plugs/coil holes have a tendency to go bad. and so over time the oil will leak in to that area. you can use a rag and soaked up most of it before removing the plugs.. however I do recommend replacing the seals. you can find them here on Pelican or even on eBay, our Volkswagen Passat dealt with the same issue until I change the seals.

Will do. Thanks for the info!.. I cleaned the area with shop rags making sure everything was clean and dry before pulling the plugs. I installed the new plugs (NGK Laser Platinum, .31 gap) and coils. The car feels like it drives much better. However... now my check engine light is on?? Did I miss something? I've never had the engine light on before. I disconnected the battery. It did go off but only for one drive. The light turned on again the very next time I started the car. Ugh!

You are welcome, the check engine is dealing with your coils. They may have gotten oil inside the boot area. Also check your grounds on top of the head. The coil boots come apart and can be cleaned better. That oil will keep flooding in if not fixed.
You can get a Blue tooth OBDII on ebay for $7 and it works great! Well worth it. |

Glad to have helped out :-) let me knkw what you find out. That little OBDII is pretty nice and accurate for the cost. Comes with instructions and all. I can post a picture of it after work. Would be worth cleaning the coils for sure though.
