Transmission fluid change.

I own a 2014 Audi A5 coupe with 72k miles & was contemplating having the trans oil & filter changed along with the engine oil. Other forums have stated this oil does not need changing as Audi claims it’s lifetime. Thoughts?

I'm wrestling with the same question on my wife's Q3; it's at ~52k miles right now.

Audi does claim lifetime fill for the transmission. I guess that's one way to determine the lifetime of the vehicle - never change the trans fluid and the trans eventually dies, right?

I know of several instances where changing fluid in an Audi auto transmission did more damage than good. The fresh fluid apparently cleaned out some gunk which then caused seals to start leaking. I don't really know where the mileage cutoff is. ZF (provider of the auto trans in many of the older Audi's) at one point stated that transmission fluid should be changed every 50-75k miles (while Audi said "lifetime fill"). I'm not sure who is producing transmissions for Audi now.

Regardless, I tackled the fluid change in my older A6's and will probably do it on the Q3. It's an involved process (car has to be running and at temperature to set the fluid level correctly).

From what I have heard over the years in the auto biz, if you have no slipping symptoms it's usually safe to change the fluid, but if you're changing the fluid to try to stop slipping it can actually make to problem worse sometimes.
