Is there a switch going bad
 

My wife has a 1997 VW Jetta GLX with the VR6 in it. Sometimes when I push the clutch in and turn the key it won't start. All the lights come on normally but, the starter won't turn. This is a car that you have to have the clutch in to start it. I was wondering if there is a switch that tells the car the clutch is in and allows the starter to turn. I replaced the starter this spring so I don't think it could be the starter. Yesterday, I drove the car to work and when I got in it to start the car to go home it wouldn't let the starter engage. It was almost 100 degrees outside and it's an old car if that could have anything to do with it. I ended up pushing the clutch in and let my foot slip off of it so that it would slam back up in place. After that it started right up. Don't know if that was coincidence or not. It has around 157,000 miles. It's been a great car and still seems to run good. What do you guys think?

Sure sounds like it's the switch that you mention. it should be located near the pivot point on the clutch pedal arm in the footwell. I recommend disconnecting it and installing a jumper wire to see if the switch is at fault.
