2003 GTI VR6 Tranny Removal Problem

Hello and help requested... first time post.

I have hit the wall with my efforts to pull a transmission from my 2003 GTI VR6 (6 speed manual), having attempted to follow the directions on this site: pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Volkswagen_Golf_GTI_Mk_IV/103-TRANS-Transmission_Removal/103-TRANS-Transmission_Removal.htm

I have detached everything from the transmission and it is loose from the engine (1-2 inches)... but it will not drop down on my jack. (Engine is on a separate jack) There seems to be something attached inside the bell housing that will not allow the transmission to separate completely from the engine. I have wrestled with the thing for hours to no avail, rotating it 20 degrees... but it just hangs on. I've jacked the tranny it up and down 5 inches and made sure it's clear of the sub-frame. But nothing. Yeah it's making me crazy. Anyone know the secret -- or the simple step I've missed?

Thanks!
