vw door handle alignment

I have a 2001 Passat. I repaired the door lock module, and everything is working right, but I can't get the door handle to return to its flush position. It sticks out about 1/8 in., and seems to be pushing against something inside. I removed the handle assembly, and found a spring-loaded flap inside that I can't see any use for. It sits flush with the door panel when installed. Anyone know what this is supposed to do, and what is causing my problem? One end of this flap has notches in it. Looks like it's supposed to connect with something, but door handle won't fit it.

Solved!

I solved my own problem. I wish all the posts about these door handles would have mentioned it. That spring-loaded flap is there to make the handle retract. Not really needed, but that's vw. When you replace the handle, you need to be sure to pull it toward the back of the door with it pushed all the way in. Then it will connect with this flap. Since I didn't do that, I sprung the flap enough that it wouldn't connect with the posts on the inner handle. I had to hook some wire on the flap to pull it out enough to connect. Now I know! Handle works fine, now. hope this helps somebody else, and hope my explanation makes sense!
