"Check coolant" message when turning off?
 

Hi!
I am getting a "Check coolant level" every time I shut off my '97 M3. It has 112K. I changed the water pump at 60K, and the car is not overheating. The coolant level is perfect when the engine is cold or hot. Belts look OK. Bad sensor? Or?
If it is a bad sensor, is there an electrical test to confirm it?

it is your level sensor.

I replaced my sensor and it didn't fix it. Others have had the same effect.

One person replaced the connector and fixed theirs. I know of another that replaced their reservoir and fixed it.

Let me know what fixes yours. I'd start with the connector then the sensor based on order of cost.

Me, I ignore it. I know my level is good.

p.s. Did I mention it is common? :) :(

Bleed the heck out of it may solve the problem. I had to repeat bleeding every times the msg came on and finally got rid of it.

Changing the level sensor fixed it. I removed the fan shroud to gain access, and then removed the coolant expansion tank. See the first two links below for pics and hints. I did not remove the lower coolant expansion tank hose, just the top, and I had enough room to install the sensor. Remember to bleed the tank. Instructions are in the third link below. Don't let the dog lick up the sweet anti-freeze, could mean x's over the eyes.
