The adjustment procedure is covered in Haynes, as much as anything is.

The general idea is to get the bottom part of the shift lever vertical, and just touching the 1st/Rev detent, when the transmission is in neutral. Tighten the adjustment up and try to find the gears, then finagle as necessary.
There isn't a whole lot of feel, unfortunately, due to the number of components and possible wear points. When everything is new, the TS can shift reasonably well, but never anywhere near as good as a modern car.
