heres a lil biologic info re: rabies. here in arizona we have the mongollon rim. this is a vertical escarpment 1000's of feet high. it crosses the state west to east roughly.
this is a natural barrier to most mammals. "most" being the key word. now rabies used to be pretty much above the "rim" in larger mammals. but as time has passed rabies has been passed down to smaller mammals who are very adept at climbing up and down the rim. think squirrels,skunks,chippymonks etc.
rabies has now been introduced into the lower elevations by these smaller critters to the larger critters. mtn lion bobby kitties raccoons etc. down in lower elevations.
the "plague" of the BUBONIC type used to also be found at higher elevations because of the rim being a natural barrier. but the same has occurred with the smaller climbing critters and now we HAVE PLAGUE and RABIES in non historical areas. in otherwords EVERYWHERE!
we have had a family of raccoons break into a cabin and the havoc they did was on par with bears. they aint cute.
