Well I just bought a 1998 Boxster 3X black 5 speed 19866 miles. Would not sell the car, love it.
I first looked on ebay to see what was there,it is a buyers market. Remember there are shipping companies that can bring a car from Calif to NY. You need to request and get a PPI from the seller, you will probably pay for it.
Personally I would get the newest car that you can for what funds you have to spend. Also get the options you want. Wait for the right one to come along. It will happen
You may want to go out and drive a few in your area. I thought that I wanted Black or Blue with Tan interior.I wnet to a used car lot and drove a Dark Blue with Tan interior, the interior was terrible IMHO because of the black accents, it looked cheap and I passed.
Go online to some of the Boxster BBS and check those out and see what they may have to say. Go to your local Porsche dealer and see what they have to say, maybe they have a car there and they may have someone on the sales staff who owns one. I found a parts guy who has one and he has been a great help.
