no juice - aaaargh!

everybody's input on my previous post was tremendously helpful, but now I've got another problem:

I've got a '74 1.8L. w/ a fresh battery, I get all electrical working (lights, radio; etc.). If I try the ignition, however, the car shorts out and stays dead. The starter will crank for about 1.5 sec., and then nothing. My problem is that I'm not sure how I can get a test light or voltage reading w/ no power : )

I've cleaned the earth strap and battery grounds, replaced the connections at the battery leads, replaced the relays on the board (I only had 2?), and checked the relay under the passenger seat. I have cleaned the connection at the starter (on the bolt) - is there a ground at the starter that I'm overlooking? I can't make hide or hair of the wiring diagrams : ) A couple of people have suggested the ignition switch, but the symptoms sound more like a bad or missing ground to me.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated - while I like driving the 911SC around town, I've got an x-cross in 2 weeks that I'm hoping to use the 914 for...
