Apple us becoming a follower by feeling the "need" to constantly screw with things just for the sake of screwing with them and keeping up with everyone else. When you're a leader you get to SET trends, not respond to them and if your product is good enough you don't have to constantly fart around with it and stick the customers on the perpetual upgrade treadmill which just pisses them off.

A lot of it is sales-driven bean counter nonsense which is transparent and pisses off people just as much if not more.
