shouldn't need to fiddle with anything if the switch is working OK.
the entire system should be under vacuum (25"+) before attempting to charge - when you crack the valve it will suck the freon out of the can, enough to run the compressor which will do the rest of the job.

i just installed a pelican-rebuilt compressor a few weeks ago...replaced all o rings, receiver dryer, LP switch, welded leaky evaporator...had all hoses rebuilt a few years ago, and with my special condenser...cold air is life changing.
