Please help me identify this car!!
Not a Porsche owner yet, but I'm trying my best -- I am regularly leaving business cards on a ride that hasn't moved in a couple of years (last TX registration is out as of 2/2019) at a relatives condo property close to where I live. My first card was an offer to buy, but now I'm leaving cards just trying to guess the model year - at this point I'd settle just to hear the story about it.
Anyway, I've gone back and forth quite a bit about what it is. The fender flares don't look right to be a 930, but the tea-tray tail says otherwise? The chrome trim and wheels make me think late 70's, but the bumpers look more mid-early 80's. I noticed the hood paint doesn't quite match in color, so maybe the car was in an accident at some point and got non-original parts installed? Anyway, I'm going to keep leaving cards because it needs to be cleaned up and driven and maybe I'll get lucky, but I'm sure there's a far more seasoned Porsche expert here who can offer some insight well beyond what I've been able to glean from the Internet. My guess is '84ish Carrera with a "wrong" tail. Thanks in advance! ![]()

No real mystery there...80's something Carrera with optional tail and somebody polished the Fuchs. Porsche sold a zillion of them.

Yeh it would be cool to pick it up, but don't go in blind, these cars do not like sitting.
To resurrect the forgotten girl, one would need to be prepared for a whole list of chores, from fuel drain/purge, ALL fluids changed, possible fuel head rebuild, fuel pump check valves replaced, dried hoses and gaskets. Depending on how close a major road is to where it has been sitting, maybe wheel bearings as well. Curious note that some folks aren't aware of, is that cars sitting stagnate for long periods of time are subjected to nearby road vibrations that cause the wheel bearings to become metal to metal contact as the pressure and vibration displace the grease and then pitting can occur. If this occurs, wheel bearings can fail in a very short time frame after rolling once again. Garage queens are subject to this malady as well. Mark |

My cousin just picked up one like this, non-turbo with a turbo tail that had been sitting under a canopy for over 15 years. I said to him pretend your wallet is like a visit to the dentist "open w...iiiide!"

This car is in Austin, off of a decently busy street, and parked maybe 100 yards from the lake, and a mile from IH 35. There's a good chance what you're noting with the wheel bearings is a valid concern. |

If you know and don't mind sharing, any ballpark on what he wound up getting it for? In the event the owner ever actually calls me, I'd like to have an idea of something comparable.

What does it say on the rear deck lid?
My 82 SC came stock from Porsche with a tea tray so don't discount that. Discount the headlight trim rings, popular aftermarket swap for decades. The chrome around the windows is odd. My SC had black anodized as does my 86 930. I thought that started in the early 80's? Maybe this is a late 70's SC?

Yeah, my 77 911 has chrome trim and rear pop outs. My 81 930 has black anodized trim and fixed rear windows. I’m not sure but I think 77 was the last year for chrome
I’m guessing the yellow car has a 2.7 liter motor. For a point of reference I paid $12,000 for my 77 about a year and a half ago. Straight rust free body, crappy re-spray, shot interior, original drivetrain but, the Motir was out and missing the induction. I’d say $15-20 for the yellow car DOC

Actually, after looking at the pix again and seeing the large bumper pads , I’m thinking the yellow car is a 78 or 79 which would be a bonus if has the original 3.0 liter with the big port heads and runners.
Perhaps 79 was the last year for chrome trim ?
