Disconnect your hood struts and see if that helps. I used the more powerful lifetime struts on my 73 and had same problem.

Ertech,

Are you talking about the front tip of fender at the bumper or the rear tip at the cowl?

The only adjustment is a the 4 bolts on the hood. Typically, to raise the hood to meet the fender, washers are used to shim the hood. I would say you need to remove the washers to lower the hood.

There is some additional adjustment where the hinge bolts to the body. 3 bolts.

You may be able to lower the latch mechanism inside the front trunk to pull the hood down more. Also you can remove the two rubber bump stops at each corner.

This is generally very tricky to get it right.
Short hoods are generally easier to align than long hoods.
Before you start fooling around with the drunk lid beyond adjusting the little round rubber bumpers at the front as others have suggested above, there are five things you should probably do.
1. Check your level of patience. If you don’t have lots, then stop and hand it over to somebody who does.
2. Put double masking tape on the rear corners of the lid and the inside edges of the fenders.
3. Find two thin flat pieces of tin or similar. Wrap (both sides) in masking tape and then tape down on the cowling just underneath the rear corners of the lid to protect the cowling in case you slip and let the lid slide back too much on the hinge.
4. Tape a clean large rag onto each fender beside the hinges to protect your precious paint from fumbling tools.
5. Remove the lid latch portion attached to the lid. Don’t want to get the lid stuck closed with an inadvertent latch misalignment.

Adjustments:

A. As BSNMOE said above, pull the pins from the top struts and close the lid. The struts take up a lot of slack in well worn hinge assemblies. If that solves your problem then go to C, below.

B. The top of the hinge attached to the lid gets you the for-aft adjustment, side to side adjustment pronounced more towards the front (I.e. moving the lit forward on one side even a tiny bit translates to a very large adjustment at the latch end), and, moving the lid back towards the cowl has the effect of lowering the lid somewhat to match the fender line. MARK YOUR STARTING POSITION SO YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK IF YOU SCREW UP.

C. The hinge portion attached to the body is the most daunting. Adjustment is thru three 13mm head bolts. The bolt holes in the in the hinges are elongated so you can move the hinge up, down, for and aft. Study it as the hinge pivot is a bit counter intuitive. MARK YOUR STARTING POSITION SO YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK IF YOU SCREW UP. Loosening the top rear bolt and the bottom rear bolt, and, leaving the front bolt position stationary, will give you an up/down adjustment with a slight for/aft movement that an be further adjust with instruction B, above.

D. Sometimes B and/or C will give you the right placement but may push the rear of the lid too low vis-a-vis fender/ cowling seam. Adjustment can be achieved with one or more shims in the top of the hinge. A shim at the back bolt will give you a different result than one at the front or one on each bolt, so it’s a bit of trial and error.

E. If your lid does not align hight wise with the cowling at the centre back then you can adjust it with the black bracket behind the trunk cover protecting the electricals.

F. Once you think you have acceptable alignment put back the upper strut pins (without locks) and test by closing. Probably you will find some push up at the rear to rectify. Pull the pins and adjust, repeat.

G. If you still cannot align the lid to the fenders to your satisfaction, it may mean that the fenders need to be loosened and repositioned. This is a major task as not all fenders will release easily after years of crud, dried out compounds, etc.

H. lastly, re-install the upper lid latch. Hand tighten, carefully put lid down to see if the alignment is decent. Flashlight is helpful. Adjust as required to get it to catch the safety latch. Tighten bolts a bit more and push down a bit harder to hopefully get the lid home. You may need to adjust the bottom lock mechanism as well.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Johan

Clarify question.
At front, rear or both?
Do you have the right TOTAL amount of gap when you add up both sides at front and at back?
Does the hood align at the front with the fenders?
A few pics are worth a thousand words.

I know this is old but,

Open the hood, stand at the cowl end and push the hood hard towards the other side. You may have to do it a few times.
