'feature' added to 930 starter
 

Hi All,

I recently purchased a 930 Turbo. It's a 1980's RoW 930, originally delivered in Switzerland. Early '90's it went to Texas and in 2010 it came back to Europe again.

I've been renewing the complete suspension and while doing this, I noticed that the starter has a - non original - 'feature' added to it. Anyone knows what it could be for? The part itself is made in the USA and I suspect it was added during its stay in the States. What is it for??

remote solenoid
to address either a bad solenoid on the starter
or
address a voltage drop issue (common on many VW air cooled)

these where common on older fords

Also known as a relay. Not normally needed on a well maintained car, but it can give a better shot at giving full voltage to the starter solenoid when you turn the key. Also transfers the amperage load from the switching mechanism to the relay.

Ok thanks. Delete it and have the starter rebuild?

I would delete it and address anything wrong in the starter it self. For me, its just another possible failure point.

As mentioned, Ford used these back in the day--you could remotely start the car with the key "on" while under the hood if you jammed a big screwdriver between those antenna-like terminals!

Could that solenoid be used in "reverse" to disable the starter based on a car alarm?

Yes it can.
you can put a hidden switch to control the added solenoid and that would cut the power from the battery to the starter.

that would make it a true starter kill
