Another 930 painting thread
Since I removed my sunroof in June, I've decided to go all in and repaint the car. The car was originally Light Blue Metallic but has been painted Black twice before I bought it, the last time a year or two before I bought it in 2003. Since it's an IROC tribute car, I'm thinking of painting it Jade.
My plan is to finish by March 2024 so start the clock! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1690321337.JPG I'll strip it down and take it to the painter. At this point I'm not planning to remove the suspension so it'll just be a top side exterior and interior paint job including engine and frunk compartments. Still some decisions to be made like, "rockers or not?" |
Good luck David! My one year project has now lasted 7 years… oh that’s after the first 18 years sitting in my garage in pieces

My home and auto big projects normally take at least 2 years so this will be quite a feat if I can pull it off.
I'll be losing my wife's little drawing she made when the paint started peeling off a rear flare: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1690407340.JPG Doors are all stripped, time to strip out the frunk: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1690407444.JPG |

Yes, good luck David! However, that should be a reasonable timeline barring any "life changes" that get in the way. |
Yes, it is sad. In the last 25 years I have this car for about one month, only to find out after the 18 years of sitting, then paint and interior. I just stuck the engine and transmission back in as they were only to be reminded the engine had massive oil leaks and two broken head studs upon first attempt to retorque after installation. Now the engine sits in my garage torn down to the short block. Hopefully finished in a year or two.

Made up your mind on the paint?

Plan is to paint it Jade Green like this:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1692024950.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1692024950.jpg I have the front almost stripped. My goal is to get it to the paint shop by mid-September. I'm also changing from a ducktail to an AIR IROC tail. This tail differs from the original IROC tail by being flat across the vent so there's room for an intercooler. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1692025116.JPG |
I particularly like the second pic ;-)
That IROC looks sweet. I’ve never seen Jade in person |

Front end is pretty much ready for painter. I removed the entire front harness too since plan is to build a stripped down harness to fit the stripped down, lightweight theme.

Kevin, Do you mean David?

Making progress, engine's out and removing ancillary stuff around the engine.
I will pull the fenders, doors, tail, hood, bumpers, etc. I'm not planning to remove the suspension since there's no rust to address on the body besides a little bit on the windshield frame. Plus I drive this car on the back roads of the Texas Hill Country and will have rock chips in the new paint in short order. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1692717613.JPG |
Love to see a long-time board member still getting after it. Bravo
Gonna look fantastic in that color |

Damn David!!
You didn't invite me over to turn a wrench? I'm so sad. Anyway, awesome, the car will be wicked once done. I like AIR's stuff. Great color choice too. I'll miss the Star Wars cartoon characters. Which body shop are you using? |
Paint will be PPG (3000 maybe?) and Jade Green 227 comes up in PPG colors.
There's a little autobody repair shop by my house. I found them a couple years ago on Google maps near my house with a near perfect rating and used them to paint my IROC bumpers. They were fast and really good quality. I went back recently and asked about painting the whole car. They said they don't usually do whole cars but said they'd do it. The owner is a young guy who I just found out my next door neighbor has known for years. My neighbor said he started with a mobile repair business and worked up to the shop he has now. Just a good guy, very clean facility and apparently good employees. The best part is, he gets work done quick without cutting quality. Yasin, I'd love for you to come over and help me figure out where all the parts go! |
