I’m installing my gauges today.

The gas can is new and empty. Also it’s about 18” below the car. Car is on a lift. |
Couple more videos.
The afr is really not too bad. Maybe my ignition advance is off. I opened the wintec this morning and found advance was set at 50! So I adjusted it down to 25 initial advance which didn’t seem to change much. https://youtube.com/shorts/yZ7jda7T8K4?si=6qEosGDiJWaZ6n3A https://youtube.com/shorts/QX-QKri5WgA?si=JAgiiougU-WXH6B6 |

Wideband O2 is great, but... They actually work best when things are more dialed in than they sound at present. If mixture (maybe even timing, although no direct experience of that) is wildly off, you'll have incomplete combustion. Which reads lean on the sensor - because too much oxygen present. I saw this tuning idle mixture; had a rich misfire which wasn't bad enough to actually hear, and kept fattening fuel trim because lambda read low. And it read leaner and leaner each time... So I stepped away and googled it, and the internet had the answer. As I leaned it out from "too rich" to get closer to lambda, it read richer and richer. When things got close to "correct", it began to respond as you'd expect (eg leaner read leaner, richer read richer). Flames out of the exhaust sound like something isn't firing at all - or firing completely out of sequence (eg wrong point in cycle). Which would fit with headers not being hot... And then unburnt fuel ignites in the pipe, rather than the combustion chamber. I'd expect this to read lean on the O2 sensor - excess fuel in the exhaust will also shorten the life of the O2 sensor, as these get contaminated/poisoned quite quickly. |

Timing advance set at 50 and reset to 25? |
Two cylinders are not running fully. I do have spark and I do have fuel.
So next is compression. I did a compression test last night. But I don’t trust the tool I used. I did have some irrational numbers. Part of that is tool but I feel some is engine. It has to be. And it’s not half the engine now. I have one on one bank and one on the other. Number 2 and number 6. This is why at one time I thought this problem traveled. I wondered if I didn’t have things grounded well enough. I’m all over the place. |
Engine seems good. I now have all cylinders firing. Temps across all six are similar. Runs smooth but I need to get a tune sorted. Who can help? I don’t know if I should plug in numbers in a chart or just try and tune using VE. I’d like to drive it once I finish up putting it together. I won’t drive it until I’m confident I won’t blow it up. My new boost spring is I think 14lb.
If anyone knows someone or is able to help me let’s set up a time that works for you/them? Pm me and we can talk. Thanks. https://youtube.com/shorts/Q0dlyW2e_fE?si=VVqm7V2OduCjjvvi |
It runs. I think it was fouling plugs as was mentioned. Just had a rich tune I guess. I’ve never seen that happen before on this car. Interestingly this all started after a spin and trip up a curb and onto a sidewalk. It was a bit dramatic and I thought my timing was off because of engine going backward maybe.
I had do t leak down test which passed really well though so I was confused. At this point I’m happy obviously. It seems really good and happy. I’ll still need to get it tuned though. This ecu gets a lot of bad publicity and there must be something to that. But it does work and this one(gt200) has a lot of features. Many that I’m still not using. But the fact the company is out of business is scary for sure. Anyway here is the video of it running well. I probably ran a quarter tank of fuel through it just making sure things were good. https://youtube.com/shorts/e9DWaBcB_dY?si=bvDmEeI8oe3CfnEH |
Hey Brando - great to hear youi're back at it there and on ally cyl's! Hope all's well with you out thar otherwise...

As a follow up I have learned a few more things about tuning and found that my tune was screwy and fouling plugs. My current tune is working well and I quite like the electromotive unit once have a clue how things work.
|
Great to hear Brando! I love my Electromotive crankfire setup!
All's swell here brutha... put bout 9k WOT miles on mine since rebuild 2yrs ago - getting faster and happier with EVERY MILE. Soooosososososossosossosososoooooo goooood! Other than that, enjoyin the heck outta summer! Hope to see more of you n yerz here 8 ) |
So after all the many checks I finally got the engine out to check the cam timing.
It was the cam timing. My no4 side is late to open up compared to the no1 side. Between that and a lot of time that may have allowed things to get further screwy i was chasing my tail. Symptoms initially were an engine that didn’t want to run and after changing tunes and trying to make it run it was running just not as well as it could. I ordered a new cam tool since mine is wrong. Mine is for an earlier car and I did t know they would be different. They are. I will update. But I suspect I’ll have to change tunes. |
Brando
did the car ever run correctly before it sat? cam timing just does not change. no expert but i have had a tensioner fail. my 74 started to run awful one night, i limped home. The next day it ran great. i just chalked it up to a washed out cylinder, fouled plug or damp wires , Then bam cylinder 4 and 5, bent valves , tensioner let go . just some food for thought seeing as your tensioners sat static for quite a few years . also i made the mistake when i put my 76 row turbo back together . i put the new distributor wires on the cap to run cw like a normal 911. 75-77 turbos run ccw the car still ran but it ran awful. |

did the car ever run correctly before it sat? cam timing just does not change all by itself . i am no expert and have made my fair share of misstates. I did have had a tensioner fail. my 74 started to run awful one night, i limped home. The next day it ran great. i just chalked it up to a washed out cylinder, fouled plug or damp wires , Then later the next day the tensioner failed bent valves on 4 and 5 . just some food for thought seeing as your tensioners sat static for quite a few years . also i made the mistake when i put my 76 row turbo back together . i put the new distributor wires on the cap to run cw like a normal 911 as im sure you are aware 75-77 turbos run ccw. i was really surprised the car started and ran . Regards Ned |
It ran badly since the spin/curb hit. I'm not sure if it was the spin or the curb hit. the no1 timing is 1.49mm and the no4 side opens to .16 at z.
