As I mentioned, mine is daily driven (non EFI) and twin plugged and I'm rollin' with the W4CSs. I ordered them today and should get them next week! We'll see...
|
How much boost are you running? If it's mild boost, then the W4CS would suit perfectly, but for higher boost (~1.4bar) applications, the colder W3 series is probably a better choice, with aftermarket ignition like MSD or Crane.
|
Where are you guys getting your plugs (for ones that the local auto parts places, etc do not carry)? Is there a place that has better deals on non stock plugs?

You've got it right about NGKs - low numbers are hot & high numbers are cold. I was guessing that my engine profile was most like a 993 (EFI/EDIS ignition). As far as I can tell the OEM NGK for the 1997 993 turbo is a "6" heat range. So I went one colder and am using a "7." So far they're the right color and I'm not getting pinging.

Sand man, did you get the W4Cs's installed yet?

I was running NGK B8 and wonder if that is too cold. Mine is really a track only car though. |
Bosch
FYI...this can be useful if you're trying to spec a plug;

Does anyone know what the OEM plug is for a completely stock street only 1979 row 930?
|
Mine is a street only car. If you're not seeing fouling with the 8 on the track than it is certainly safer.

Stock plug is the Bosch W3DPO on my euro '81

Just picked up some new beaut BOSCH W4CS plugs for my car. What kind of plug gaps are you guys running with your EFI setups?
I'm still running the OEM Carrera ignition system, so I'm thinking perhaps 0.024" - 0.028". Advice/suggestions? |
I notice many folks are running the W4CS plug which is a non-projected plug vs the stock W3DP0. I see the same with NGK's were folks are running B8ES vs BP8ES. What's the thought behind this?
|
I'm now running a BOSCH 5 heat range in my car (FR5DTC) as I was experiencing excessive fouling with a 3 or 4 heat range in my daily driver. The 5's are performing very well. 993TT's use a 6 heat range (FR6DLC's)
|
I ordered some NGK iridiums from www.sparkplugs.com in an 8 heat range which corresponds to the Bosch 4 heat range. My plugs are very light so I don't want to go any hotter. I'm temped to go even colder, but I figure getting the thing to start may be a chore.
I never got a reply on the projected question, so I went with non-projected. |
Talk about timing! I was just pulling the plugs last night and looking at what I had (Bosch W3DPO) and what I was thinking of trying (NGK BP8ES). I didn't actually go for the NGK's due to cheapness, but instead they seemed to be a recommended replacement plug for the 3.3t.
Now, after reading this thread... hmm. I'm also wondering about the different style of electrode between the NGK and Bosch - does the Bosch have an advantage in that regard, as well as being Platinum? Do you guys bother cleaning your plugs and putting them back in, or always throw away? My W3DPO's have maybe 2000 miles on them max, but a little sooty (too cold?). Quick car stats: B&B exhaust, K27-7200, Andial enrichment, stock WG, 1bar spring, modded Euro fuel distributor. Cheers, Rob. |
I change plugs way too often :D.
The W3DPO's are like a 9 heat range NGK so they're very cold. That's probably why they're so dark. A Bosch W8CS is like an 8 heat range NGK. |
