turbo rebuild question?
hello
I have a question concerning a 3.3 rebuild Just about to put together my motor (has been in the works for long long time) When purchasing parts was going to use all A.R.P. stuff but was told to use 993 head studs instead Anyone have any experience, knowledge, or comments? The motor is a 3.3, case has been knife edged, 8 to 1 JE pistons, cmw stage 4 twin plugged heads, A.R.P. con rod bolts, 3.2 intake, 964 cams, 934 single turbo headers, t-36 turbo,72 lb. injectors, tec-3r running sequential (two pickup points) Am planning on running moderate boost but obviously would like motor to be as bulletproof as possible thanks john |
Use ARP. More expensive but better.
|
Just rebuilt my motor close to your specs running all ARP. My engine builder said he still sees 993 head bolts break.
|
IMO, when it comes to fasteners, use the best quality you can... it's what holds the motor together, so I wouldn't skimp just for a few dollars saving. ARP is the way to go!
If you plan to run serious boost, you should look at flame ringing the heads/cylinders. They call it "Nerosisting" I believe. It'll handle boost presssures in excess of 1.4bar and you won't have any leakage issues. Worth it for the extra peace of mind. Most big power builds opt for the GT2-EVO cams. Any reason why you chose 964 CAMs? |
The 993 Turbo studs are very good----don't get the fully threaded type, though. Anything over 600bhp, go ARP, Raceware or SuperTec.
You've got the right idea---focusing on the Rod bolts! :) |
I opt for Pauter connecting rods over just changinf the rod bolts. They come with their own bolts which are superior to both the stock and ARP. Switching to better rods would up the price of the rebuild by $1,000 over the ARP bolt replacement but, when building a high Turbo engine the money would be well spent.
|
My Pauter connecting rods came with ARP bolts.
|
Hmmm. I didn't know that ARP was the company supplying the bolts for Pauter but, I did know that they were of a bigger size when used with Pauter rods and able to withstand more stress than the original sized rod bolts.
|
jrottn, is your car going to be pure street, or also a track car?
If it's going to see serious track time, then yes, spend the extra G and upgrade the rods to Pauter with ARP bolts. For a street car, the 930 rods are fine IMO... lots of big HP cars running around with OEM rods. They are pretty tough. Just don't go over-revving too often :D |
thanks everyone for the info
this car is a street legal( I live in NH so that is pretty easy ) track/time trial car I have been building the car for 7 years I bought the car salvaged with broken head studs and most of the body panels (including doors) missing The car is a 1982 930 that I believe was a slant nose (has rear brake vents) The car now has heim jointed suspension, rsr coil overs, s4 front brakes with the old fronts on the rear, a full cage, and non-slant bodywork from gt-racing ( hoping for sub 2400 lbs.) When purchasing the heads from CMW they recomended these head studs over the ARPs although I am not sure if they are standard issue 993 head studs (did they make a 993 rsr?). I will double check the part # on them I am using the 964 cams because of the broad power range. Where the evo cams make more peak power I think the 964s will come on a little more quickly Also the heads are flame ringed I am sticking with stock rods for now (running 6900 rev limit) but if $ were no object I would be first in line for a set of those Ti pauter rods Thanks again for the help I will keep you posted on the rebuild john |
Good luck... seems like you have a sound build sheet there ;)
|
John,
Keep us posted on your rebuild. My rebuild is very similar to yours, and I am interested in your successful installation of the TEC3-R unit, as I have the same unit. |
just pulled the trigger on the head studs
even though I already have the 993's I will sleep better knowing the car has all ARP stuff my friend/turbo guru just finished an engine similar to mine with 3.6 intakes so hopefully we will start building this puppy shortly thanks for the advice john |
Good choice John. You can't go wrong with ARP, or RaceWare fasteners.
