question about catalytic

I'm in the process of deciding on engine upgrades. A stage 1 approach, bolt on stuff. Turbo, headers and intercooler for my 1988 930 turbo cab.

The question is: What about the catalytic converter? If I do the upgrades, can I keep a cat in place or do I have to forgo it? If I can leave it in place, would it defeat the purpose of upgrading the power?

Thanks,

The cat is after the turbo so you can take it off and put it on as needed for inspection.

I know that. But is it really that bad to leave it or replace it with an aftermarket unit like the one offered by our sponsor? Not to be green (since my Turbo only gets about 11MPG) but, why not, if it's doable?

You will be missing out on HP by keeping the cat. Turbos like very little back pressure.

I think also, in additon to the loss of performance, and others please correct me if I am wrong, but with your modifications you will most likely need to "fatten" up the CO which is not good for the cat (clog/ burn it up), and if you run the car lean for the cat then you risk damage to yor engine. Also, the cat generates a tremendous amount of heat that I would think you would want to eliminate...

Having 'been there', I'll give you a heads up to help you.
Fabricate or have someone fabricate a catalyst just like this:

The catalyst adds a very small amount of muffling to the car and is a straight through honeycomb design for minimal backpressure.

Do whatever you want to the car for performance.
Lean it out for emissions and *stay off the boost* during that time.

That's it!

More pictures and visual information. Build your motor & catalyst and go have fun
