Where is your CHT....
plumbed in....
New to me 1986 Turbo...CHT thermocouple is attached to #6 exhaust stud.... Getting reading of 450 degrees and I've got it rich, on the verge of oscillation.... Is this within range??? Wouldn't the exhaust temps read higher than the cylinder head temps??? TIA |
BTW...a meat thermometer touching #6 cyl head reads 180 while the CHT reads 250....
|
My factory CHT sensor screws into cylinder head # 3.
|
Thank you sir...an exhaust bolt didn't seem to be the right place to check CHT.....
|
No, it really should be embedded into the head itself for a more accurate reading.
|
My readings (3.3) run between 300 to 350 deg. f
On another turbo engine (3.2 twin) where I run a horizontal fan , the temps run 250 to 300 deg. f If you can get the thermocouple sender fastened into the head itself, you could get the truest reading. When attaching it to an exhaust stud you may pick up irrelevant ambient heat off of the header tube. Marty |
VDO makes a CHT gauge. The temp sensor is a copper washer which surrounds a spark plug and seats onto the cylinder. I have one and it matches exactly what my temp gun reads at the cylinder. I've used these on other engines and they have always read accurately.
|
Yes...mine is a VDO with a copper lead...I'm guessing it broke in the past and was rerouted to the exhaust bolt...
|
I think it should be more centrally located between the intake and exhaust. Otherwise it will be skewed one way or the other.
Maybe you could get another lead, washer? Good Luck, |
I've been meaning to pick up a temp gun anyways....now seems like a good time...Thanks Again!

For future searchers info:
Picked up a heat gun.....cyl head temps were reading 225-265 while VDO guage was reading 450..... |
mede8er,
Did you check the exhaust side and the intake side? Just for fun I would be interested in knowing your exhaust temp, and turbo temp at idle with a warm car. Just for comparisons sake. It is fun to check the temps of the intercooler in and out as well! Ok sorry, I get too carried away with this temp gun :) |
Hehhehheh...yeah, I was shootin that thing all over...but I'm leaving for DC in the morning and won't be back till next weekend...
I'll put a log book together then... |
