Temp gauge question.

Will this be a direct swap over to a 79 930?
Pic A) is the gauge from a 78 SC.. with numerical temp reading.
Pic B) is the color reading temp gauge from my 79 930....
Will A) swap over onto B) with out issues? or are the readings set at different levels? the SC never reads above 180 really even when on the track.. but the 930 reads high.. if the the 930 gauge(gauge B) had numbers.. it would read about 250/255 if it were to be overlayed onto the SC gauge (gauge A) * does the Turbo just run hot??

I just want to swap gauge B out for gauge A so I can get a better idea what I am running on the 930 temp wise...

I'm running the numbered temp gauge and the 0-140 PSI-calibrated pressure gauge that came with a '77 S. Nothing about the readings lead me to believe that they're not completely accurate with the stock 930 senders.

Turbos do generate lots of heat. Especially when hard-running, high ambients or sitting in traffic. FMOC is the fix for the first two, Carrera with fan for the last.

That said, 250 sounds too high to me. Two things:

i) Are you just assuming that the two gauges are the same scale? You mean you normally run at the bottom of the red band?

ii) Does your gauge have temperature markings on the far edge? Like this:

I have the one you have posted, yeah the little number are over there... I normally run at the 248-250'ish range.. even when it's not too hot out.
I fear that if I were to take it to the track and run it .. this would cause it to run way too hot!
What do you think I should start looking for, as to the cause car running hot. I have all the oil is new and at the correct levels. Do you think it could be running lean?

I was running those temps around town and I was running lean. I also swapped the numbered gauge from a 1977 SC, the senders are the same.

Verify the temperatures you are seeing on the gauge are accurate...don't assume the gauge is correct. I posted a couple of threads regarding this issue.

I just picked up the numerical gauge you show above, and it has a different sensing unit that the stock SC (which I have curently).

Did the 930 always run hot, or is this a new issue?

Sender for a 1978 SC is the same as a 1979 Turbo: VDO-911-606-112-00-M82 Porsche-901-641-632-00

Thanks guys..
I'll go pull mine out of the SC and try it ..
Hey, So what are normal running temps of a early 930..?

equality72521 11-18-2007 03:42 PM

Now that I have a numbered gauge I can say I'm running between 210°F and ~230°F on a 80°F-90°F day..

Thanks Mark,
I guess the 930's just run a bit warmer.. than the ole SC does.
I'll check the mixture as well to see if the extra heat is from a lean runner.

I had similar issues with running way hot and turns out my thermostat in the wheel well was bad. Make sure that the thermostat is opening and sending opil to the front trombone or oil cooler. You can check this by feeling the oil lines in the front fender near the oil trombone and see if they feel hot. If not the thermostat is stuck closed.
It still runs hotter than my 911SC though. Think about it. If you are making 300hp versus 200hp most of that engine power is heat.....so the 930 is gonna run alot hotter.

Good point, on the extra heat. I will also check the thermo in the fender......hell your SC makes 200.. mine doesn't make 200 even on in it's best day ;) haha
