Maxx: read your PM... and are we all still disputing the 911/930 thing? I thought this thread would end on page one. It's still NO... and why would you?

I have a vote for the other side of the fence.
The mechanic that did most of the body re-assembly on my car could have or build any Porsche he wanted. What did he drive? A completely tricked out C3 with SC flares and a 2.7RS spec engine.
He would regularly drive the car to a distant huge Porsche event, place in the concours, place or win the auto-x, place or win the road race event, then drive several hundred miles home.
I asked him why he didn't have a turbo. He said very frankly "they aren't as much fun to drive the way I like to drive". I road shotgun with him many times and have to agree. That man could drive.

Well now that Brian boldy stepped out I guess I can throw in agreement. Over the years I've done them all including widebody and turbo. My project for life is a '73 with 3.6L. I just got back from a R Gruppe road run in Texas. We had a blast, 4K-5K RPM for roughly 420 miles. 20 cars, I co-drove my son's similar car, '71 with modded 3.2L. On the backroad twistys or throttle down on the highways his modded 3.2L in a lightweight car (RS bodywork) never left me wanting more power, traction, brakes or top end MPH. It feels like a large go-cart.
At this run we had one driver in a DE set-up supersized 930 (dyno'd 400WHP) who later said in the hotel lounge "debriefing" he was driving 2ND gear, only rarely into 3rd, and the car just needed gearing for spirited road driving. I jabbed him about having a hot rod with that ancient GM 2-speed Powerglide transmission. He was quick once lined up, but on the back road twistys he was staying in "the gear" and modulating the boost gage.
One is a Rapier and the other a Broadsword, both can get the job done but come on guys, I was the exception and ran 125 for a brief time. Do you really need a trans/motor that compromises response below 100MPH just for autobahn potential top end?
Back to the subject of the thread if it were a Carerra or Turbo for everyday I'd choose the Carrera for throttle/gearing response, cost of ownership (motor life). Would I miss the Turbos straightline THRUST and drop dead good looks, hell yes! In these two catagories the Carrera is simply ulitarian.

All I can say is.....shift man shift...4th gear isn't the only gear in the car, there are 3 others leading up to that one, you don't always have to go all the way to the end and do 120+. Hell my favorite thing is doing the 2nd-3rd gear boogie on country roads blasting thru the twisties from 30 -90mph with tires smoke'n..farmers running..chickens flying.....
Hell, I get waving arms, flipping finger(you know the one), thumb up's, skirts lifting...what do you me compromised response?
Mark

The 2nd to 3rd is my favorite shift, too - gawd, everything happens just soooo fast!!!! The 3rd to 4th gear run is hella scary! Wifey complains about my brown racing stripes...so I've cut back on that one.

And that is what I like about the 915. I have the best of both worlds. :)

Gotta say that I have had both (sort of) I made my car into a turbo after I could not handle the NA world anylonger. I could never go back unless another 914-6 poped up like the 1 below that was mine. now that is a gokart with gokart response. other wise turbo all the wayhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1209157172.jpg

No, the best of both worlds is a modded 930 with a REAL 5-speed in it! ;)

jbrinkley 04-25-2008 07:54 PM

test drove a Carrera and it felt slow

this is true, lol

RarlyL8 04-26-2008 06:25 AM

For $10K I'll pass on the "real" 5spd. There are few good bangs for the buck in the Porsche world. For $1000 the 915 is one of them.

It is a bit nicer depending how much torque you have. This is a Andial built T. P. 3.2 high rev cam ( 7500 + RPM ) / 1.2-1.4 boost w RUF comp 5spd. With that combination it really needs the 5 spd. However another I have has 3.5 lower torque curve motor and the 4 speed seems just fine. I suppose with a 5 spd it might cut lap times a little but you wouldn't feel it in the seat except for the wallet being a little thinner.
